The Story

Following the intense events of Magik #3, Illyana is barely holding it together. Liminal abducted her with the intent of reshaping her into a magical being like himself, something she flat-out refused. Instead, he proposed a dangerous wager: if Illyana could resist the pull of Darkchild for three weeks, he’d purge it from her and grant her the freedom she longs for. But if she failed, Darkchild would take over and rule at Liminal’s side. Now, Illyana has just three weeks to stop Liminal or lose herself to Darkchild forever.

Once Illyana was released from Liminal’s realm, she ran into a longtime friend, Dani Moonstar. Once Dani hears about the wager made between Illyana and Liminal, she immediately voices her concern. She says three weeks just isn’t enough time to defeat Liminal, and there must’ve been another way. Illyana makes it clear there was no other way to escape Liminal’s realm. Illyana wants Dani to leave, as she doesn’t want to risk her safety. Dani, who is now apart of The Society of the Eternal Dawn, says she isn’t leaving until they ward Liminal’s seal, especially now that Illyana magic is being affected.

The Writing

Ashley Allen establishes the tone immediately between the two characters by having Dani and Illyana arguing back and forth while simultaneously taking down demons left and right. Both are powerful fighters and can hold their own while showing concern of the other’s wellbeing. I loved Illyana and Dani’s dynamic, which their love for eachother showing brightly on each page.

After the wild events that have happened so far for Illyana in this run, it was nice to see someone that can ground her, and is willing to fight for her.

Another excellent installment of this dark and otherworldly comic run from Allen!

The Art

While Magik has been dripping in darkness and mystical artwork, there was a lighter energy in Magik #4. Of course, there’s still the demons, and the magic throughout the comic, there was a feeling of comfort surrounding Illyana all due to Dani’s presence.

The artists perfectly illustrated the strength these two had for each other and for themselves when faced with danger. Speaking of danger, Dani and Illyana get into quite a bit of it, and it leads to really stunning panels. With Dani and Illyana’s magic juxtaposing the demonic beings attacking them, you’re left with fight scenes that are as beautiful as they are haunting.

Overall Grade – 8.8/10
