Sabretooth is a one man wrecking crew of the Five Points in turn-of-the-century New York. Under the pseudonym “Mad Dog Murphy”, he rips every street gang to shreds. Whether it be a rowdy bunch of thugs, or powered up organized criminals, no one can seem to stop the inevitable. When these gangs decide to unite and hire some muscle of their own, Sabretooth and Fisk may be in for a real challenge to the throne. Sabretooth: The Dead Don’t Talk continues!

Sabretooth: The Dead Don’t Talk About the Road So Far

Sabretooth has terminated his employment with Mr. Sinister at Ravencroft after an offer he couldn’t refuse. After being recruited by a shadowy criminal simply known as “Fisk” in the early 1900’s New York City. Sabretooth is on the tear through the Five Points. No gang is safe. The Bowery Boys, The Dead Rabbits, The Plug Uglies, and the Yancy Street Gang are no match for a predator of Victor Creeds abilities.

Catch up with issue #1!

What happens next in this issue is only logical…escalation. Now he’s dealing with masked thugs, Sorcerers, Technicians, the Undead, and even Vampires. Still, none of them have the resources or skills to stop a killing machine of his caliber.

The Hunter, The Gatherer, and All the Rest

“The Gardner” as Fisk is so labeled, is the brains behind the braun so to speak. Politics and red tape are his specialty and the 2 of them as a team are enemy number 1 in the eyes of New York’s criminal underground. An attack by a giant humanoid Crocodile makes it clear that these gangs are uniting against a common enemy and things are only going to get tougher.

Sabretooth: The Dead Don’t Talk and the Gangs of New York

Right out of the gate I was giddy with joy to see Frank Tieri include the historic gangs of The Five Points in this book! I’m a big fan of history and I love the movie Gangs of New York. To see The Dead Rabbits make an appearance in a MARVEL comic is peak mash-up fiction! Beyond that, it’s cool to see classic street gangs based on current Marvel characters like “The Street Sorcerers Supreme” and “The Shockers”.

Tieri is using this time in American history to weave in the history of Marvel’s fictional New York and it’s a lot of fun.He doesn’t hold anything back either. Brutal fights, gang violence, and the politics of underground New York make for a deep world for us to explore.

The Art of Anticipation in Sabretooth: The Dead Don’t Talk

The art in this issue was just plain fun to take in. Sabretooth is brutally taking out anyone who opposes him. The action and gore is cranked up to an 11. The big fight scene between Sabretooth and the giant humanoid crocodile was exciting. A great design for a creature meant to match the intimidating nature of Victor Creed.

How brutal can Sabretooth be?!

The backdrop of the city and its depth is also so immersive. Then, Maria adds in a cast of fascinating gangs to make for some anticipated eye movement from panel to panel.

Classic New York Painted in Blood

The color work made for a dingy and dark time in New York City. A lot of brown, orange, yellow, and black creates an ominous feeling about the city backdrop. Then when you add some splashes of red blood and white hot rage from Sabretooth’s brutal violence, it all comes together.

Overall Grade: 8.5/10

I must confess that I find myself a little biased towards this story because of my love for film and history. Cool gangs, brutal violence, a giant man eating crocodile mutant…the list can go one. Tieri is setting up a really fun tale of gang politics and how someone like Sabretooth fits into it as an enforcer. It’ll be interesting to see how he develops as a chaotic force in an organized world.
