The Story
After Michael Badilino was was captured and tortured by the evil Dr. Kumar and Death Row, the attention of the Spirits of Vengeance was garnered. Dr. Kumar was hoping the mistreatment of Michael would bring Vengeance to them but also grabbed the attention of Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch. Vengeance, who is separated from Michael, cannot see see his host being attacked and not do something about it. While Vengeance takes on Kumer, Blaze and Ketch decide to take down the group of mercenaries, Death Row.
It seems there’s a bigger plan going on than just a mercenary job, as Dr. Kumar has an offer to make Vengeance. If he abandons Michael as his host, he will spare his life. Kumar says that a spirit as powerful as vengeance deserves a host that’ll allow it to act unrestrained.
While all this is happening, Michael is in dire need of medical attention after all of the violence he’s endured at the hands of Kumar and Death Row.
The Writing
Sabir Pirzada set the tone immediately with a calm-spoken Dr. Kumar and an angry Vengeance spirit, with both keeping that energy throughout the comic. There’s quite a few moving parts throughout the comic, but it’s all handled expertly by Pirzada. The mystery behind who is the Spirit of Violence, and who their host is, has yet to be solved, but the build up is fantastic. I’m really looking forward to seeing how these new factors play out in the next issue of Spirits of Vengeance.
The Art
There’s quite a few different artist on the team for Spirits of Vengeance, and it shows how much work it takes to make a comic like this. Throughout the comic, we get to see a huge amount of details in each panel that makes each fight scene even more powerful. Some of the best example of this is towards the end with Vengeance and Michael, but that’s all I’ll say on that without giving anything away.
Something I really appreciate about the artists of Spirits of Vengeance #5 is that they really nailed the tone, which connected so well with the story. It really makes the whole comic book come together really well.
Overall Grade – 8.8 / 10
