The character work shines, particularly with Donna Troy. Her quick thinking and evolving leadership are showcased in tense moments, solidifying her as a cornerstone of the Titans. Layman balances action, introspection, and setup for future arcs, crafting a story that leaves readers both satisfied and eager for what’s next.
Art, Colors, Letters and Layouts:
Pete Woods delivers solid visuals that enhance the story’s themes of fear and manipulation. While not groundbreaking, the art serves the narrative well, particularly during the dream-like sequences where hazy white panel borders help differentiate reality from illusion. Clock King’s menacing presence is effectively framed, adding a layer of unease.
The action sequences are well-executed, maintaining a good sense of motion and suspense. Woods’ colors, especially in the dreamscapes, effectively convey the characters’ emotional turmoil, creating an atmospheric tone that supports the story.
Wes Abbott’s lettering complements the visuals, adding clarity and emotion to the dialogue, especially in moments of heightened tension. The combined effort of the art and letters ensures the story flows smoothly, even if the visuals aren’t revolutionary.
Final Thoughts
Titans #17 delivers a mix of psychological drama and action, supported by a competent creative team. Layman’s storytelling keeps the narrative engaging, while Woods’ art effectively conveys the story’s darker themes, even if it doesn’t push any visual boundaries. The issue builds tension well and sets up intriguing possibilities for the future without feeling overly ambitious.
