Last we left Joy and her estranged husband, Colson, they were both realizing that the mysterious girl, Artemis, needs to back into the black hole. But the issue is that they have already sent soldiers into the black hole, and none came back out. Of course, they have to go back in to take the mysterious girl back, but how?

Joy says it all depends on how they view the black hole. If they go in with hope, perhaps that’s what they’ll receive back from it, as it’s already met their aggression with the same in return. The hope is that once they’re inside, maybe Artemis, Art for short, can help them find out why it’s still opened and assist them in closing the black hole.

Once they’re inside the the black hole, they get a good idea as to exactly how much alien life they’ll be dealing with. Of course, it’s not a mission inside a black hole without something going wrong. They’re down a soldier, have already been attacked by an unknown alien creature, and Art is nowhere to be found. This mission is already showing them why their teams never came back.

The Art and Letters

There’s only one way to describe the artwork of Dark Empty Void #2 and it’s out of this world. My silly pun aside, it really is a feast for the eyes. I think the talents of Chris Shehan and Francesco Segala really shine the brightest once we follow the team into the black hole. With the beautiful abstract art, to the facial expressions of Joy and Colson, all of this hits so hard. Justin Birch’s lettering work really packs a punch as it perfectly fits the many tones of the story. I’d say the artists alone deserve a 10 out of 10.

The Writing

Zack Kaplan continues to impress with Dark Empty Void #2 and he creates a world that you can’t quite wrap your head around. When reading, you think you know what’s going to happen, but I assure you that you don’t. He keeps the story continuing from the first installment while making it even more compelling than the first. I really can’t wait to see what lies ahead for Joy and Colson and I am dying to know more about Artemis.

Final Thoughts

I thought Dark Empty Void #1 started off really strong, but the second installment proves that streak will continue. I’m over the moon about Dark Empty Void #2.
