Calavera #1 is an introduction to a brand new story. It follows the main character named Juan Calavera, who was a hero. Juan did a lot of things during his lifetime. The only thing is that he doesn’t know how he died. This first issue gives me Fallout T.V. series vibes, similar to the Ghoul. Juan is awakened, and ultimately he is walking around dead. Juan’s soul will not rest until he finds the people who killed him.
Calavera is a short read, but it seems that a lot is coming. Including him building relationships with some of the people, who are among the living. I really enjoyed the setup to Juan’s story. It seems that there is going to be a lot of action in the ongoing series. I also like that Juan is still coming to terms that he is dead. It also seems that he is out for revenge, and really wants to find the person or people responsible.
This story also gives me a feeling of the Wild, Wild West film. Juan knows his way around a gun, and has no trouble killing people. In my mind, you kind of have to have an imagination, because how can a guy who is dead kill someone? That is my only critique going into this series. Juan seems like he doesn’t care about much. He really just has a mission and hopefully, he can finally rest. I really like the art, the art style is much different than some of the comic issues I’ve read before. It has more of a cartoon-ish type style that looks really neat. I also love the vibrant colors that are within the comic panels.
I give this a 8.5/10.
