DC Horror Presents: Creature Commandos #2:
Dr. West has assembled a team of creatures to face an enemy that no human could combat. Wrought with the guilt of a previous mission leaving one of their own dead, she is carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. Her team, however, is off to a great start as they battle and test one another, leaving Dr. West with no other choice but to send a fresh face into danger with them in hopes she has what it takes to succeed in saving the world.
Creative Team:
Writer: David Dastmalchian
Art: Jesus Hervas
Colors: Alex Guimaraes
Letters: Ferran Delgado
Cover: Tirso
Let’s Start With the Story:
From the get-go, this story has a very unique sense of dread and fear to it. Starting with a flashback sequence showcasing the dangers of working with these creatures does a great job at setting the stakes up high and showing that these characters are unruly and there is a chance being taken on them.
Having characters such as Lucky face off against zombie beings introduces the horror aspect, and I think David nails the tone they are setting out for. This issue has fully fleshed out the stage as it is set, and we are ready to kick off the action. Plus, any story with Zatanna in it gets applause from me!
Now For Some Art and Letters:
Ferran does some extremely fantastic lettering in this issue, implementing styles that showcase the horrors the team faced on their first mission and the screams of anguish as they lost a team member. When it comes to art, there is a gritty and rough style to it, which fits the theme once again and endears itself to the horror aspect that this story falls within. We get to see flashes of the team’s unique powers and their grotesque skins that you can almost feel show that Hervas and Guimaraes feel at home in the story.
Overall:
I appreciated that the team gave us a glimpse of the capabilities of the Commandos and set the stage for what is yet to come from this story. This issue was action-heavy and felt like a horror film, and I am ready to see the bloody twists and turns they have on the road ahead. I will continue reading this run!
9/10.
