Catch up with Captain America #13!
“THE NEW WARRIORS THREE! J. Michael Straczynski revisits THOR and SPIDER-MAN! Still reeling from recent events at the Front Door Cabaret, Captain America needs friends now more than ever. But Spidey and Thor have problems of their own, and so the impromptu Warriors Three set out on an adventure that will either draw them closer together or drive them all insane!”
Cap’s in need of friends
Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, has done all he can as America’s strongest soldier and will continue to do so, but between all of the heroics and superhero business, he still feels like an outsider. Of course he has the other heroes he works with, their his comrades in battle, but are they his friends?
Along with Cap in this comic, we also the pleasure of seeing Thor and Spider-Man as they both have their own issues happening in their lives. Thor is living through the guilt of moving the Asgardians to Broxton and then the God of Hammers mercilessly attacked killing innocent people. Thor believes the attack was his fault and he’s looking for revenge.
Spider-Man actually already has Steve Rogers on his mind as he’s struggling to make himself make the call to ask Steve to have dinner. Luckily, Spider-Man, aka Peter Parker, doesn’t have to make that call because Steve does it for him! They make plans for dinner but Steve immediately cancels, but still asks Peter to come over in work mode because Thor just arrived and he needs help. So, together, they make a new Warriors Three to get Thor the revenge he seeks in honor of the town of Broxton.
The Writing
I think this was a great bit of continuation in a rather exciting run for Captain America. While not too much happened, the comic set up some pretty exciting stuff. It was interesting to see Steve be so vulnerable about not having any friends, and was really heartwarming that Peter is the one he would turn to.
I think that’s a good theme of this comic, vulnerability. We see it with all three heroes and it’s shown in different ways that are authentic to the characters. If there was any three that should work together, it’s these three. I am really looking forward to seeing Steve, Thor, and Peter all work together to help Thor in something that cuts so deep for him.
The Art
I really enjoyed the dark and grittiness of the artwork for Captain America #14! I think it meshed really well with the overall tone of the book as well as the character’s storylines. Carlos Magno always delivers top quality work and this is no exception. With Espen Grundetjern handling the coloring and Joe Caramagna on letters, there’s no going wrong here.
