There was so much excitement for The Avengers Annual #1, that it took a collaboration between Kat and myself, Megan! Enjoy our joint review!

The Stone Bearers

When Thanos held his love, Death, captive inside the seventh Infinity Stone, the Death Stone, he didn’t expect it to defy his orders and refuse his commands. Now that he realizes he can’t control the Death Stone, he sets out to gather all of the Infinity Stones to harness its power. That seems easy enough, right? Well, not so much. All of the Infinity Stones have human hosts, the Stone Bearers, that have harnessed the powers of the stones and removing them would be killing the hosts.

Of course, Thanos isn’t against killing the hosts but understandably so, the Stone Bearers would rather not die. Star, Overtime, Quantum, Multitude, Apex, Colleen Wing, and Phil Coulson are the Stone Bearers and must fight against Thanos to save their own lives along with the help of Captain Marvel and Thor.

Less than enthusiastic first meeting

The first time the Stone Bearers meet, it doesn’t go the way you’d expect. Yes, they all want to stay alive, but the fight for power is neverending, especially when it’s coming from Star. Star is a problem for the others as she wants to be in charge and simply doesn’t play well with others. Star, being the host of the Reality Stone, thinks her powers are greater than anyone else’s so clear she must be in charge. I’ll be honest, I have never been so annoyed with a character right off the bat. But I think that goes to show how well she was written if she was able to make such a big impression.

While Star is showing how she is clearly not leader material, she attacks Thor and Captain Marvel with her Reality Stone Powers. She’s under the impression that Thor and Captain Marvel are out to take her powers from her, even though the real threat is on its way. That leads Apex and Quantum to jump onto her bandwagon and join in her attack of the Avengers. Unfortunately for them, that’s when the real threat shows up in all his purple and power-hungry glory.

The Art

Megan – The bright colors adds so much excitement to an already compelling comic book. The colors juxtaposed with the fantastic amount of detail on each character makes this such a fun read. Guru-eFX continues to showcase his talents as the colorer, which worked wonderfully with Cory Petit’s lettering and Salvador Larroca’s art.

Kat – Salvador Larroca has knocked this issue’s art out of the park. Right from the first panel, the art sucks you into the issue’s story. And every panel makes you more and more interested with what’s happening.

The Writing

Megan – I found this to be a very exciting issue with heightened emotions throughout the read. Derek Landy makes it a fun ride while leaving you wanting more. There was a few humorous moments that I think balanced really well with the action. Derek Landry wrote the characters very well that made you feel emotionally connected to them until the very end.

Kat – Derek Landy knows what he is doing with this issue. Since this is ending the Infinity Watch storyline, he has made this story so fun to read. And not only that, the writing makes you wonder what’s coming next.

Final Thoughts

Megan – I thought this was a creative and compelling ending to this run! It felt like it was written with the Avengers fans in mind. I look forward to seeing what’s next for the creative team.

9 out of 10

Kat – This is the perfect way to end the Infinity Watch event. Between the art and the writing, this is an Annual that every fan needs to check out.
