Let’s Talk Art and Letters:
There is a lot of inner-monologuing going on in this issue amongst the outward conversation amongst characters. This is not a bad thing as I felt Jeff did a fantastic job crafting up the letters in a unique style which allowed you to know what character was inwardly speaking and then outwardly. It helped move the story seamlessly.
As for the art, Terry and Rachel crafted A mix of disguises and intimate moments wonderfully. Calvin’s James Bond-like look was captured down to his physique. The issue featured swift hand-to-hand combat and it never felt too jumbled amongst the panels. This is a character driven story and the art drives that narrative by adding detail to our characters and leaving the background a lot less detailed.
The Story:
Pornsak discusses how this is a love letter to the stories his father told him growing up and how he built upon this dream of creating a spy who was similar to but very different from 007. Pornsak was able to weave an intriguing story of spycraft, betrayal, and emotion all within this one shot. It was a very well-flowing story that was a love letter to old spy tales and an homage to sentimental stories.
Overall Feelings:
The Horizon Experiment #1: The Manchurian starts this anthology run with a compelling story of a unique spycraft set in Chinese espionage. It is a character-driven tale that uses action only when needed and shows how there are more than stereotypical spy types out there.
9/10 Overall.
