Ultramega #5 continues the cosmic, kaiju-battling saga that’s equal parts psychedelic mayhem and apocalyptic horror. As a mysterious plague turns ordinary people into grotesque, massive kaiju, only the Ultramega—three humans granted godlike powers—can stand against the chaos. This issue escalates the conflict to its breaking point, questioning whether the Ultramega can truly prevail in a war that’s tearing the world apart.

James Harren returns with a much-anticipated installment, and it’s as wild and intense as expected. Harren has woven an intricate and fast-paced narrative where no side is clearly the “good guys.” This ambiguity adds a layer of intrigue, pushing readers to focus on the dialogue to figure out which moral path the story is taking.
The core concept—humans and kaiju in a symbiotic or parasitic relationship—is as unique as it is chaotic. Harren manages to keep the intensity high, even though the story frequently jumps across time and place. While this may disorient newer readers, veterans of the series will find that these shifts only add to the sense of cosmic unpredictability. There are visual and textual cues that provide enough grounding to keep the narrative coherent.
This issue, while packed with dense plot threads, does offer some bread crumbs for new readers. However, to fully appreciate the layered world-building, it’s best to dive into the first arc.

The Art, Colors and Letters:
Harren’s art, combined with Dave Stewart’s colors, is an absolute spectacle. The fight scenes are explosively graphic, bringing the kaiju vs. Ultramega battles to life in jaw-dropping fashion. Each punch, explosion, and monstrous transformation feels weighty and kinetic, with bright colors accentuating the frenetic energy of the story.
Stewart’s vibrant hues elevate the pacing, especially in the more action-packed sequences, making each panel pulse with energy. The character designs are a highlight, with kaijus and Ultramegas alike feeling larger-than-life, surreal, and unique.
The lettering further enhances the experience, with distinct speech bubbles and fonts giving each character—especially the kaiju—their own voice. The colored dialogue bubbles aid in making the chaotic battles easier to follow, providing a much-needed sense of clarity amidst the madness.
Final Thoughts:
Ultramega #5 is a visually stunning and narratively ambitious issue that hits hard with its intense action and moral ambiguity. While the narrative’s jumps in time and space may be challenging for some, it’s a thrilling installment for those invested in the Ultramega saga. With its cosmic stakes, imaginative designs, and bombastic fights, this issue will leave fans hungry for more.
