Prairie Dogs #1 introduces us to Freddy, a retired racing driver who just can’t stand living a quiet, retired life. The issue, which stands alone as a complete tale, shows us the lengths Freddy is willing to go to just to prove he is the best driver to ever run the track in Broadacres.

The only way to prove he is the best to ever do it? By beating the only undefeated driver on the speedway: The devil.

Writing

This is my first time reading Shane’s work, and I really enjoyed it. We are given enough back story for Freddy that the stakes feel very real. Even though I have never been a professional racing fan myself, I have however always enjoyed Speed Racer. This issue feels like Speed Racer meets Twilight Zone.

By the time we get to the final act, you will find yourself flipping the pages faster and faster until the finish line of the final page.

Artwork

I really enjoy Shane’s artwork style in this book. It is gritty and dark, which perfectly matches the overall mood of the story. You can’t exactly have bright and shiny pictures telling a tale about racing the devil… The main cover shows Shane’s heavy use of blacks and his line work really shines.

Final Thoughts

As the first issue in what will be an ongoing series, this really hit a lot of fun notes for me. I enjoyed the planning and race elements. I also think the action of the final act of the book was really well done.

If you enjoy action, and an internally driven character who is determined to be the absolute best there is, Prairie Gods #1 is a can’t miss book. I can’t wait to explore more of the Broadacres characters in future issues.

Final Grade: 8.5 mph out of 10
