Two Must Become One
Natasha Romanoff has bonded with a young symbiote and now they’re partners in crime. But with the symbiote being so young, it needs to be trained in order to handle the missions Natasha goes on. As we all know, Natasha was trained in the Red Room at a young age, which desensitized her to be able to handle any mission. However, that does make it difficult for other’s to see a mission the way she does.
In Black Widow: Venomous #1, Natasha and the symbiote break into a science lab that is performing cruel testing on symbiotes named Alchemax. While on mission, the symbiote touches a security guard and sees his memories of the mistreatment of the symbiotes and sees the joy he felt. It becomes too much for the symbiote to they abandon Natasha out of fear. Once the mission is over and after a long talk with the symbiote, Natasha decides some training is in order for her alien partner. With the help of some old friends, Natasha puts the symbiote in a training boot camp to prepare for what missions lie ahead.
The Art
The art of Black Widow: Venomous #1 is beautifully done and feels perfect for the character and the story. It’s dark and sleek, which gives it the espionage vibe that usually comes with Black Widow. But also has the black and red theme throughout the comic, with the grittiness that accompanies the symbiotes. Personally, I think the way Black Widow is drawn is simply stunning. Natasha looks like an absolute bombshell that can destroy you with one look.
The Writing
Erica Schultz does it again! I loved the story of Black Widow: Venomous #1 with Black Widow being the teacher this time and training someone else. Even if it’s a symbiote, it was nice to see Natasha want to do things differently than how they were done to her. It felt like she had a mothering aspect to her when she was kind and understanding to the feelings of the symbiote. I think it was a very creative way to show the true bond she has with the symbiote. The dialogue was excellent between Natasha’s old friends that showed up to assist in the training. It felt really authentic to each character.
