Redcoat #4:
The Founding Fathers have captured our annoying and unlucky immortal Simon! Issue #4 bursts onto the scene unlocking more secrets about that fated day in 1776. Only with the potential help of young Albert Einstein can Simon hope to escape this cults deadly grasp!
The Art:
The art continues to blow me away as we are taken to new venues and arenas. Going from a sacrificial room to a confusing forest of cherry trees to the ocean, every location is covered in immense detail. The action sequences are drawn and colored in such a way that it will leave the reader sweating, and our “heroes” dash for their safety. The minute attention to things such as the sweat dripping down Simon’s face and the melting candle wax are the endearing points that show how much love is poured into its pages. The standout for me is the final two pages of this issue. It will blow you away in a flash of lightning as the true villain is revealed, and we are left in this monumental moment, where our jaws hang to the floor.
The Writing:
Geoff Johns may have the most fun he has had in a long time. It oozes from the pages as the comedic timing and quipping of Simon left me with a smile from ear to ear. He is a bumbling idiot written in such an endearing way you are rooting for him. Geoff has even made the reader care about Benedict Arnold, and this buddy cop story with Einstein and Pure is one of the best things I have read in 2024. Leigh carries some heavy weight as a couple of pages are simply black, leaving us in an emotional moment with Einstein and Simon that Rob crafts and hits the emotional beats. Amongst the silliness of this issue, it has a strong emotional character moment.
Overall:
Redcoat #4 delivers emotional character development entangled in good old-fashioned buddy cop fun and action. The cliffhanger at the end came as a massive surprise to me as I did not see it coming, which makes this story add a layer of complexion to it. Midway through the year, this may be the comic of 2024.
