Star Wars: The High Republic #8 – Overcoming A Monster

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And I’m going to be reviewing the latest issue in The High Republic from Cavan Scott and Marvel Comics!

This issue is a continuation of the storyline where we see a motley crew of Jedi, mercenaries, and a former Nihil banding together for a common cause to find a Force sensitive child. The saying is of course “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” But can you really trust that “friend” when they’re Lourna Dee, former ally to Nihil leader Marchion Ro? With that said, let’s jump into it!

Star Wars: The High Republic issue #8 by Cavan Scott (writer), Jim Towe (artist), Jim Campbell (colorist) & VC’s Ariana Maher (letterer) does not take very long to jump into the action, and there is PLENTY of action in this issue. After a brief discussion to figure out how ready the crew is and after a failed attempt to be stealthy that fails spectacularly, things kick into high gear.

While our heroes are attempting to fight their way to the child they’re trying to rescue, we see that she’s being held down for nefarious purposes that I can’t even fathom what they want to do with her. And the worst part is the villains are willing to throw her to the “wolves”, or in this case the Nameless. The Nameless are creatures that focus on Force sensative individuals and basically bring out the worst fear from inside of them and make it extremely hard for Force users to use their ability’s.

The standout moment of this issue is the action sequences drawn & colored by Jim Towe & Jim Campbell. There’s a lot going on, but it doesn’t feel overwhelming. And they do a great job of not making it feel repetitive or that the heroes are just going through the motions. And the art throughout this issue is great as well. It’s got a dark vibe to it that reminds me a little bit of a horror movie in some aspects.

Final Point: The issue ends on a great cliffhanger that I’m definitely interested to see, and Cavan Scott does a great job telling a story with a lot of different characters uniting for a common goal. It’s going to be interesting to see where things go from here, and it’s definitely a story that Star Wars fans should add to their pull list and catch up on if they’re not doing so already.

Score: 9.0 out of 10
