The Batman First Knight #3:
The jig is up for Bruce as Julie has discovered his once well-kept secret, leading to an unexpected night of romance for the Prince of Gotham. However, the streets won’t clean themselves and there is still work to be done as we see Bruce delve further into becoming the detective we know Batman to be. The mysterious figure known as The Voice can bring back the dead…or can he? As this epic three-issue story reaches its climax we find our heroes in desperate hours. Gotham once more is on the brink of destruction. Can Batman become the symbol he has always strived to become, or will he become consumed in his quest for vengeance?
The Art:
Perkins and Spicer have saved their best for last in this finale. It is filled with so many moments that showcase Batman and how we have all grown up seeing him in various ways, from diving off buildings to hiding within the shadows. We are even treated to the first rendition of the Bat-Plane in this issue. Mike Perkins did a wonderful job crafting the legend of our Dark Knight. The way he was able to hone in on the classic playboy style and contrast it with epic panels featuring him in heroic moments leaves the audience cheering left and right.
Spicer, meanwhile on the colors further crafts the mystery of Batman as he works to create the shadows and the fog that blends in with him. The color work in this issue and overall were very well done and compliment Perkins in harmony.
The Writing:
Dan Jurgens sticks the landing in this finale. My particularly favorite moment comes when he and Julie share a tender moment when she discovers he is Batman and accepts his quest and understands what he is doing showing him compassion. He then follows it up with Bruce, showing that he has become Batman, as he is found dissecting the creatures and diving deeply into his detective work. I love the duality of Bruce and Batman, and Jurgens understands both aspects. There are moments where Batman is explaining to The Voice that further showcase to the reader just how much this team loves and respects the lore of Batman.
Overall:
This tale is wrapped up excellently and is a fine addition to the rich lore of DC’s most prominent hero. It is filled with fist-pumping action and heart-string-tugging moments. The Batman First Knight will make a great story to revisit for years to come.
