The Principles of Necromancy #1:

What if death was not the end all be all? What if somehow you could die but be brought back to life? At what cost would you sacrifice to do so? The Principles of Necromancy asks us these questions and more in this brutal and horrific tale in the search for ever-lasting life. Which will you choose, life at all costs or a forever death?

The Art:

This is one of the more trippier works of art I have read this year and I absolutely love it. Eamon and Jay do not shy away from the gritty details of death. Scenes with severed limbs, blood, guts, and a crab-like claw mask. This book hits all of the horrific notes and then some. The Necromancer is drawn perfectly with dark and soulless eyes peering into the abyss.

Halfway through this tale, however, they change gears from your traditional colors to another dimension of yellows and black. Their ability to switch gears yet take their work up a notch is a testament to the abilities of this team. They take risks in their art and it pays off tremendously.

The Writing:

This is different than anything the Hivemind has delivered before. It builds up a sense of dread where they may have brought us their humor. It is extremely well written and creates a crisis within readers as we question what we would do when faced with death. Jack and Collin throw us into this world full of mystery and horror, but you leave happy to be here and wanting so much more immediately. There is a shroud of mystery around The Necromancer that they give just enough without going in too much too soon.

Overall:

Magma Comix is here in a big way with this dark, bloodthirsty tale that will leave you both queezy and wanting more. I think the team assembled here is the perfect team-up as the art is so inviting that we cannot look away. Meanwhile, the writing has us guessing at every page what exactly is going on. This is going to be a comic to pull monthly and a publisher to keep your eyes out for. Do not miss out!
