READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW
Thunderbolts vs. American Kaiju:
What do you get when you bring Shang-Chi, U.S. Agent, Bucky Barnes, and The American Kaiju under one city’s roof? CHAOS AND ACTION, that’s what. This issue takes us back to the Kaiju days of old as Bucky Barnes squares off against his biggest foe yet.
The Art:
I was very impressed with Arthur’s colors in this issue, particularly how he plays with the shadows of the U.S. Agent and Shang-Chi. The dull yet vibrant color base immediately draws you into this issue before blasting you with greens, reds, and blues. Meanwhile, Geraldo also does a lot of really fun animation. A standout for me is the way Red Skull is drawn so menacingly. There is a lot to love within this issue visually. One last tidbit I really loved was the ratios played with when Bucky and Kaiju battle it out, as though I was watching a classic Japanese Godzilla film. If you are an art nerd, this issue gives you so much to love and look at.
The Writing:
The Hivemind are really, and I mean, good at sarcastic, cocky humor, which they fully uncork with when Walker comes into the fold. They are having fun writing him as he plays against Bucky and Shang-Chi, creating a wonderful meld of personalities. Forcing Bucky to trust Agent and vice versa, culminating in a gentleman’s understanding at the end, shows they are coming into their own, and Marvel was right to trust these guys with these character sets.
Overall:
I love a classic Kaiju tale. I thought this issue was fun in every aspect and that the team has hit a groove that makes me sad this is only a four-issue arc. Getting to see players work together that I never in a million years could have imagined has also been a surprise and a delight for me. There is a reason Jackson and Collin are in high demand across many properties and it’s evident here but, also the absolute glorious work with the lettering, colors, and art make this an unstoppable team.
