For this entry, we are returning to the world of “Kingdom Come” via the pages of arguably DC Comics finest duo.
With handling a return to one of Comics’ most impactful stories, the creative team have recreated the feel and themes of the original book for a new audience. It’s no wonder why this book receives all the accolades it does.
BATMAN SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #21 by MARK WAID, DAN MORA, Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands progresses the return to “Kingdom Come” with a brand new chapter. Let’s take a deeper dive into what’s happening here.
LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW

When the Flash does his routine multiverse checks, he discovers something that isn’t right. It connects to the World’s Finest: Batman and Superman.
In earlier times, David Sikela aka Boy Thunder was a sidekick to Superman. While working with the pair, Sikela became lost in the timestream.
Readers found out that where David is now is a place no one wants to go. It is the home-world of “Kingdom Come”.
The pair travels to that world in hopes of rescuing David. Unfortunately for them, things don’t go as planned. David is not the same person that they previously encounter. He has a bit of an axe to grind with no issues of unleashing his power onto the pair.
This issue begins with David attacking Superman. Readers see how David’s anger is fueling this attack. The battle doesn’t fall on deaf ears as the Superman and Batman of this Earth catch wind of the altercation.
Once they arrive, the attention shifts towards an encounter of variations. The “Kingdom Come” Superman makes a dramatic entrance into the fight between David and our Superman.
Meanwhile, Batman is left to face the “Kingdom Come” Batman with an experimental suit that readers might think looks familiar.
What happens when the heroes face their jaded versions? Fans are gifted excellent action as the story moves forward. Events build towards a dramatic entrance of someone who fans have been waiting to see.
With this debut, things shift against our heroes. That point is driven home by a two page final image that is sure to have fans talking till next issue.
Waid taps into the emotional side of Superman as a driving point of this issue.
Seeing his reaction to David’s new stat quo gave readers a clear cut indication how fast he could be corrupted by the wrong people. This is further laid out after Superman coming to terms about what has happened.
Waid also gives readers a fun introduction to the “Other” World’s finest. Waid also constructs a solid battle sequence involving more of the supporting cast.
Pacing is near perfect leading into the final act. Once here, the story drops a big exclamation point with the final two -page panel. Another big win for comic’ best.
Dan Mora on the art duties here is near perfection. From the opening page of David’s attack to the show stopping final page, the panels have a different feel to themselves.
In the first moments, Mora and Bonvillain set the pace for a fast-moving tale. The Battle of Superman officially kicks off with a splash full panel that is a fan pleaser.
The battle flows easily through the panels, giving off the magnitude of the encounter. Mora also gives Batman his time as well with a dramatic introduction for Bat’s Kingdom Come variant.
The near full page moment announces that a major showdown is brewing. The introduction of the big character comes off splendidly as readers make an instant connection to who they are. The issue closes with an excellent two-page spread that puts the story in key paces before closing up shop for this round.
FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10
DC’s legendary pair crosses over into the land of “Kingdom Come” for another excellent issue. With Waid at the helm with incredible writing and Mora’s stunning visuals, This is a no brainer on how GOOD this series is. The bar is set very high and fans won’t be disappointed after concluding this chapter.
