UNIVERSAL MONSTERS: BLOOD OF THE WOLF MAN #4: Believing

The Story:

Joshua Williamson delivers a powerful ending to the latest entry into the Universal Monsters universe. Adam’s father is not a good person and in fact he has become so lost over the years and yet we cannot help but sympathize with him on a deeper level. Williamson hits us in the heart as his fear of losing his family came to fruition in an almost self fulfilling prophecy bringing him face to face with his biggest fears. I loved how this issue focuses on showcasing Adam and his family with their mother Gwen and is focused primarily on Adam and his father. We are even left with a little bit of an open ended ending hinting at a possible future as well!

The Art:

I’m a father of two and there is a scene with Adam, his brother Felix, and their mom Gwen where she is hugging them and DC has the words My Babies softly lettered. This scene hit hard for me because this is how I hold my children and even say those words to them. The art and the way Pip and Leomacs crafted the flashback with the family shows such a soft kindness to Gwen showing the type of mother she was. Their ability to flip the switch and portray the sheer size and ferociousness of Adam as the creature, is astounding and done well. As the finale takes place at their home we get nods to a former life no longer lived through pictures and minor details in the background. There is a spread page burning into the night lighting up our eyes and the pain behind Mr. Jaeger as he does what he must is detailed in a tear-jerking manner. The art tells the real story in this issue of how heart breaking it is and the tragedy of this tale making it live rent free in my mind.

Final Thoughts:

Universal Monsters: Blood of the Wolf Man is a tragic tale of a father who fought so hard to bury his families’ secrets and did what he thought was best only for it to end in blood and flames. This is truly such a harrowing and tragic entry into the Universal Monsters franchise that will leave fans howling for more.
