GENERATION X-23 #8 – “Human Resources”

Laura Kinney, AKA Wolverine, is always ready to help a mutant in need. Her recent endeavors have included helping fellow mutants out, with the help of Logan. However, what or who they found made the mission take an unexpected turn.

The Story for GENERATION X-23 #8

We kick off with a question from Laura that feels very meta. She wonders why a search for answers always leads to more questions. That’s a sign of a good comic, in my opinion.

With Laura trying to put all the puzzle pieces together around this mutant research facility and why/how Orphan Maker and The Nanny are there, they discover a hole deep under the lab. Hoping answers are below, they venture on down. As Nanny makes a grand appearance, Logan senses there is something more going on. Laura then takes an approach none too common for a Wolverine, to find out what the hell is happening. This leads to a very unexpected room full of… spoilers!

After a beautiful moment between father and daughter, we wrap up with more chaos at the end, because looking for answers always leads to more questions.

The Art

This issue had such beautiful art. From the colors of the first page to the winding staircase, there was so much beauty in every detail. However, a few moments definitely stood above the rest. I loved the appearance of the Nanny, as Logan and Laura are both outlined and ready to go. Additionally, I loved seeing the colors and tone shift each time a past event was showcased. However, my favorite scene to look at was a sweet scene between Father and Daughter, Logan and Laura. It felt heavy and light at the same time. While some panels during this scene were detailed and focused, it was the simple art that really left an impression at the end. It said a ton about who these two are, what they’ve been through, and what their relationship is like.

Final Thoughts

This issue took an unexpected turn. While Laura has not given up on the original storyline, she’s clearly not going to give up on the new series of events that has just unfolded as well. While this issue was not action-packed (there was still action), it was absolutely fantastic. The moment with Logan and Laura at the end was just such a perfect moment, and felt so real. While jokes are made throughout, and Gabby keeps every scene light-hearted and comical, this story gets darker every issue, and this one is way darker than it seems. I’m very excited to see what all is getting set up, and how this all goes forward.

Overall Grade: 9.5/10

Generation X-23 is such a fantastic Wolverine story! If you’ve been sleeping on this, now is absolutely the time to add this one to your pull list! SNIKT!
