ABSOLUTE WONDER WOMAN #24: Be Free of Fear.

A new threat has befallen Gateway City, and Diana calls in Pegasus to help fight her long-lost brothers. However, she must be free of fear if she hopes to save the city and find Barbara before it is too late!

The Story:

Every issue features new growth in some fashion for Diana and how lessons learned come full circle closing the loop to the present. She’s now up against her brothers, the twin sons of Ares who taunt her and loathe her for having their mother’s love. What Kelly does that truly stands out is how Diana is humanized against the other God’s. Her weakness is Barbara and it’s this love for Barbara that invites fear into her in a manner that no fight or creature can. Kelly is building up the impending confrontation and heartbreak between Barbara and Diana beautifully. Her arsenal is built and forged out of magic and weapons which all get their moments to shine. I loved how Thompson and even Carey on the letters capture how at home Diana is whilst fighting and it’s truly her in her element.

The Art:

Hayden does an incredible job showcasing the imposing nature of the twins and even the eye that looms over Gateway City. Along with Jordie’s coloring the lasso shines a vibrant red in battle and I loved how Pegasus was included as well. The design for Ares sons is creative each with their own standout features that should invite fear to anyone else. However, it’s what’s in the background of this issue, such as when Barbara and Diana have a flashback to a scene together. There is a globe that appears like a TV and on that TV are hints to the universe at large. It’s a subtle way to expand the Absolute Universe and acknowledging what’s going on outside of the city in a blink and miss it moment.

Final Thoughts:

Absolute Wonder Woman #24 is building towards a heartbreaking confrontation with Cheetah and Wonder Woman. At the same time it humanizes Diana in a meaningful way while showcasing how powerful and fearless Diana can be.
