Writing

I need a minute to catch my breath. For the entirety of the promotion surrounding Avengers Armageddon, we have been promised something that would shake the foundations of the Marvel Universe. Chip Zdarksy masterfully delivered on that promise in Avengers Armageddon #4. This issue has the potential to reverberate through the Marvel Universe for a while. Zdarsky did a beautiful job in hiding this outcome from everyone in the lead-up and during the series. You know it’s a great issue when the big cliffhanger at the end of the issue isn’t even the biggest moment of the issue.

I can’t wait to see how Avengers Armageddon wraps up. This is a massive shift and creates a world where new questions abound. There are so many moments in this issue that are massive enough that Zdarsky likely won’t answer them in the next issue alone. They’re likely to flow over to the upcoming Avengers storyline. I love that possibility. There is real potential in what Zdarsky is doing with this series.

It was great to see Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar back on art for this issue. While the last issue was no slouch on the comics front, Diaz and Alpizar’s return is noticeable right from the jump. Diaz and Alpizar have a way of crafting such emotional faces in their characters. With the massive impact that will reverberate from this issue, you really needed the ability to communicate the emotional stakes of this issue and I felt like Diaz and Alpizar captured that perfectly.

Jesus Aburtov continues to be one of the best in the business when it comes to colors and Avengers Armageddon is a great example of why. This action packed issue had lots of chances for Aburtov to show off and he really capitalized on it choosing the perfect tones and shades for each moment making the big battles feel ever bigger than they already were.

Final Thoughts

Avengers Armageddon #4 is easily the best in the series so far. This issue delivers on what it promised from the start. Not only does it deliver on its promises, but it blows the doors off of them. Everything about this issue was perfect. The story was great and Diaz, Alpizar, and Aburtov are the perfect team for this series.

Overall Grade: 10 /10
