The Story
If things were bad before, they’re nothing short of terrifying now. Prisoners are dying, no one knows who’s next, and no one knows who’s behind it. Barbara Gordon is still trying to investigate as well as she can at SuperMax but that’s not easy when anyone can be a target. With no place to turn, and only one person she thinks she can trust, Barbara feels very limited on what she can do.
The plot thickens in each issue, but things really heat up in Barbara Gordon: Breakout #5! In this issue, we see Barbara start to fight back rather than being seen as the victim. With death all around her, she is more motivated than ever to figure out who’s behind this chaos before she loses anymore fellow prisoners.
Mariko Tamaki knows what she’s doing here, giving the readers just enough to have no idea where the story is going and just enough to keep us wanting more by the end of the book. The story gets darker and darker with every issue and it’s being handled flawlessly. As usual, I’m very excited to see what the next issue brings us!
The Art
What I love that Amancay Nahuelpan does so well is absolutely nail the emotions of the story through the characters. With the wonderfully detailed facial expressions, the characters practically tell the story themselves. In this issue, there are so many different emotions felt by the characters, Barbara especially, and you can see them illustrated excellently through their faces and body language.
Tamra Bonvillain handles the lettering and makes great use of the juxtapositions between the warm and cool colors. Each page is gorgeously done with its own level of vibrancy. Ariana Maher wraps this issue in a perfect bow with her work on the lettering. The heightened emotions of the characters are felt perfectly through their dialogue while you have the stability of Barbara’s inner dialogue. Another excellent job by this fantastic creative team!
Final Thoughts
This run just keeps pulling me in further and further. Each issue has me on the edge of my seat wondering what will happen next. If you haven’t checked out Barbara Gordon: Breakout yet, be sure to include it on your pull list!
