What was supposed to be the finale for THE LUCKY DEVILS, is now the penultimate issue, as there was too much story to still tell. The last issue hell was literally continuing to break loose, and we saw that Rake and Starr are not on the same page anymore. Starr believes the power of Christ compelled Rake away. Meanwhile, Collar and Cam have become bros, and they’re getting ready to spread their good word via a podcast.

The Story for ‘The Lucky Devils’ #9
Virtue is seeping into hell as the lower level devils have switched from the literal devil on their humans’ shoulders, to a metaphorical angel. In response a high level devil has made a demand for “truly heinous” behavior. This is the only way to preserve all that is bad and satanic! As this demand is made, the truth is revealed about a certain devil’s actions, the response is both hilarious and a true lesson for all those in hell.
Back on Earth the podcasting bros are hard at work making the world a better place. Meanwhile, Starr suddenly finds herself in an insane position of power. Determined to do good, she’s unaware that Rake is still whispering sweet evilness into her ear. When truths are set free, tables are turned, and our humans are left wondering what the hell to do next.
The Art
I can’t get enough of Ryan Browne’s art. It is just so much fun to take in. Not only does it perfectly move the story of our lucky devils along, it also always has little stories in the background. I absolutely loved how 2 stories were essentially taking place simultaneously at the end. There is never any space wasted when Browne is on the art. Easter Eggs can also pop up. This isn’t the first time Soule and Browne have teamed up. They also brought us the amazing comic book Eight Billion Genies. A comic that Cam is clearly a fan of.
Another moment of art and story coming together beautifully was a scene that reminded me of one of the best (if not THE best) openers for a comic book movie: X2. Whether that was an intentional nod or not, it was so much fun to see. Throw in the gorgeous colors that don these pages and you really have some perfect (and sometimes gross… I mean, they’re devils) art.

Final Thoughts
In this penultimate issue, ‘The Lucky Devils’ continues to suck me in with the amazing story, make me ooh and awe over the gorgeous art, and make me laugh. There are definitely parallels to the real world today. While we should all be the change, we also have to laugh at the absurdity of it all. I am of course referring only to the truly heinous act of cancelling a favorite TV show out of nowhere (cough… WONDER MAN… cough) and nothing else. Now we wait for the final issue to wrap up this hell of an awesome story. While, I’m sad to see it end, I can’t wait to see how it does!
Overall Grade: 10/10
