Issue nine of this wild alter-ego Shredder series continues to follow him as he is on a mission to destroy a rival organization to his old Foot Clan. The new organization is the Dog Star Clan and they are ferocious! But not in the eyes of Shredder.
In issue eight, readers will remember that Shredder defeated a part of the Dog Star Clan resulting in Shredder gaining a partner, Hoshimi. A rogue Dog Star Clan member who is tired of their tactics. This new duo is entertaining to watch within issue nine! Shredder is so focused on his mission that he completely ignores his newfound partner and the logical thinking she is using. But Shredder has his eyes on the prize!
Readers of this series will learn more about the Dog Star Clan and their strange new leader, Kenji. He is the son of the previous leader who met his end at the hands of Shredder. It is teased in issue eight that Kenji is the true brains of the Dog Star Clan. This newest issue provides a larger glimpse of Kenji and his discovery of an organism (Vreen) that is being used to control their Dog Star Clan pawns.
Shredder and Hoshimi make their way to Kenji who is waiting for them. Kenji believes he has the upper hand, till Shredder plays the hidden ball trick on him. Shredder has another partner on his team. This partner has power to help Shredder cover up everything that takes place within the end of this issue. Well, almost everything…
The Writing
Dan Watters is a magician of suspense! From the beginning of this issue to the final page keeps you on the edge of your seat. The plot for this series is a fresh take on Shredder, and it is strange but also interesting! Shredder taking on the role of a makeshift vigilante. Adding two “sidekicks” to help him on his mission is entertaining based off Shredder’s lack of compassion towards them. Spectacular character dynamics along with a suspenseful storyline!
The Artwork
The artwork within this issue by Sid Kotian and Marco Lesko is great! The art focuses on minor details within gripping panels. One of my favorite aspects of the artwork is the panels of facial close ups. Allowing the reader to see the emotion behind the narration. One thing about this issue that I believe readers will enjoy is the change in coloration during the backstory of Kenji. Rather than clouding the colors to give it a “back in time” feel, the coloration shifts to entirely faded colors throughout. Beautiful job!

Final Thoughts
This truly is an amazing take on Shredder and provides a deeper perspective to him as a whole. This series is proving that Shredder is more than the villain within Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. With this dynamic building for Shredder’s character an idea surfaced within my thoughts. What if a storyline is created where Shredder is the hero and the turtles are the villains…? Just a thought.
This issue continues to bring readers a new twist on Shredder while adding in various new players as well. The ending will shock readers which is going to make you want issue ten asap! Make sure you pick up issue nine of Shredder from your local comic shop!
