The Story:

I wasn’t familiar with Boston AKA The Deadman, at all; I headed into this. I loosely knew of him; however, seeing the team from titles such as Ice Cream Man and The Kryptonite Spectrum on the run had me intrigued off the bat. They do an amazing job of giving this story a lighthearted tone and making it inviting as we join Boston for just another day on the job of being a Soul Custodian. We’re quickly caught up to speed on how it works and that he is math-driven and, of course, often late. What stood out to me was Prince’s ability to keep the story light; however, there were quick glimpses into a much more sinister story unfolding, giving the reader just a taste of how dark this has the ability to become.

The Art and Letters:

I’m a sucker for gags within the art, and Morazzo and O’Halloran have a fun moment where they make Boston appear to turn a page and break the fourth wall. If you’re unfamiliar with the duo they invite us into. a quirky art style that’s built for this exact kind of story. The soft colors mixed in with eccentric and sometimes off-putting facial features of their characters fit a world full of the undead perfectly. The moments where Boston is shown to be a ghost were detailed very well and brought this ghastly tale to life in a fun manner.

Final Thoughts:

The Deadman #1 brings us into a world full of the undead and really into a whole other world entirely. If you’re looking to leap into a character that you are unfamiliar with, I can promise you this first issue is a must-grab!

Overall Grade: 10/10 lost souls!
