Writing
What a runaway train this was. Chip Zdarsky took us on a crazy ride in this issue, and I loved it. Last issue left off on a dark note, and we jumped right into the action in this issue. This issue and Captain America #9 were things of absolute beauty. I felt like I was tracking this series pretty well, but man, did Zdarksy pull the rug right out from under me.
The twist in this issue is one that you may or may not see coming but when it happens the way it still catches you off guard is a testament to the quality of writing Zdarksy has done on this series. I’ve never been a huge fan of General Ross, but Zdarsky makes him an even more unlikable villain in this series, and I love that. Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, Zdarsky throws a wrench in your plans. This one kept me on the edge of my seat and I never saw this one coming. Easily some of Zdarky’s best work in an already illustrious career. If this kind of grit and killer storytelling is what is in store for readers with Armageddon, then I am sold. Sign me up.
Art

Valerio Schiti and Romulo Fajardo Jr. really put some spectacular work into this issue. The art and colors, particularly involving Captain America and Salvation, are mind-blowingly beautiful. Joe Caramagna does an awesome job using speech bubbles and lettering for emphasis and big moments, and his SFX grabs your attention in the best way.
Schiti’s work on this issue is phenomenal. Despite the obvious gritty setting of Latveria, each line feels dense or crisp exactly when the story calls for it. Captain America’s conflict with Salvation is a thing of beauty, drawn to perfection.
Romulo Fajardo Jr. continues to bring these images to life in a way that creates poster-worthy panels of vibrant color amidst the dark Latverian landscape. This team is incredible, and the work shines as some of the best currently available in Marvel Comics
Final Thoughts
This issue was a one-two punch, combined with last week’s Captain America. Chip Zdarsky continues to produce some of the finest Captain America comics ever written. This entire series is phenomenal. This issue left me speechless. You can ask the rest of the Nerd Initiative team what a feat that is.
Overall Grade: 10/10
