Who Is the Shadow Boss?

Issue ten of New Avengers by Sam Humphries is a “bring it all home” issue. This book answers questions that have been posed in previous issues. Which makes this a pivotal issue. Let’s dive into New Avengers number ten!

The start of this issue takes you back in time (a week) to when Bucky (Winter Soldier) was interrogating Natasha (Black Widow) after she had taken a truth serum. This is when we learn more about “the other woman.” This information becomes very useful at the end of this issue!

The Killuminati is still sticking to their master plan of “tricking” the New Avengers into a trap. Which is funny because the New Avengers are also doing the same thing towards the Killuminati. Making it difficult to distinguish whose plan actually worked when the two actually collide.

The main part of this entire story has revolved around a character titled “The Shadow Boss.” This issue finally brings to the forefront who that individual really is. And it is someone that Bucky and Natasha are all too familiar with. The worst part about this is that the Killuminati are attempting to clone the Shadow Boss. Which doesn’t go over very well with the New Avengers.

The Writing

Sam Humphries did an amazing job with this issue. The dialogue is so captivating and has splashes of comedy, just like the previous issues. Love how this issue wrapped up the storytelling from nine previous issues without making it feel rushed. The story flowed perfectly!

The Artwork

Ton Lima and Rain Beredo together have done an exceptional job with this issue! The pencilwork for this issue is so good. There is no detail (big or small) that is left out of these panels. And the coloration comes in to make everything pop even more! This issue finds a way to bring light and dark tones together to give a remarkable visual display for the reader!

Joe Sabino is a darn good letterer! Using various forms of comment bubbles and text formats to differentiate the dialogue between characters and narration is awesome! Style, sizing, and placement are all done in a way that brings attention to them (comment bubbles) and at the same time doesn’t take away from the art of the panel, which they are in.

My Thoughts

I truly have enjoyed this new run of New Avengers by Sam Humphries. And it honestly saddens me that it is coming to an end with this issue. I feel as if Sam had more story to tell and probably had bigger and better missions for the New Avengers. But now we will never know. This ten-issue series of The New Avengers is such a good story! If you’ve been reading along, you already know what I mean. I encourage you to pick up this final issue and the previous nine to have the entire series. Your collection will thank you!
