The Story
What starts as a thrilling tale of mutants in the Wild West turns into a fight for the ages between mutants and monsters. The Outliers are comfortable and safe at Haven House, in the exciting throws of a bedtime story they’ve found themselves to be the stars of. As on edge as Calico is, the story is captivating and holding all of their attention. What they don’t notice is that true danger is on its way to them while their mentors are in their own horror story.

Outside, the older X-Men are ambushed by the antagonists of the scary stories parents tell their children. Elsa Bloodstone, Morbius, Frankenstein’s Monster, Manphibian, The Living Mummy, and Werewolf by Night appear at the Haven House with one thing of their mind; to control New Orleans. The X-Men aren’t willing to give up their home and will fight to the death, even if some of these villains are already dead.
Gail Simone brings a huge horror aspect that we’ve seen a few times in this comic run back with a bang. Bringing in iconic horror characters to fight the X-Men is as exciting as it gets, for the reader anyways. The X-Men find that these monsters are nothing to scoff at, but the real question is who is behind this plan? Who is it that sent the monsters to Haven House and who is pulling the strings? Whoever it is has their eye on the younger X-Men, who have no idea about what’s going down right outside their home. We’re left on a huge cliffhanger, leaving the comic to end on a very tense moment. Leave it to Gail Simone to leave the reader desperate for more as she does it the best!
The Art
David Marquez, Matthew Wilson, and Clayton Cowles continue their top quality artwork for The Uncanny X-Men. Switching to and from different stories, they’re able to show a variety of tones that are the exact opposite of each other with ease. From the Wild West to a spooky abandoned theme park, the reader is able to feel the emotions through the art as if they’re in the scenes themselves. What really hammers down the emotions are the facial expressions of the characters, which I’ve always loved about David Marquez’s art. The facial expressions, especially from Rogue, tell the story themselves.
Matthew Wilson brings so much fire to the pages of The Uncanny X-Men #24 with his work in the colors, somehow making the theme park panels look as gorgeous as they are menacing. Joining Wilson and Marquez is Clayton Cowles, who wraps the artwork in a nice bow with his fantastic talent with the letters. Together, the artists, once again, knock it out of the park.
Final Thoughts
With every new arc, The Uncanny X-Men gets more and more compelling. We see so many different characters that you wouldn’t expect to see in The Uncanny X-Men #24, and Gail Simone handles the balance with ease. X-Men fans will absolutely thrive with this issue as well as the fans of the monsters.
Overall Grade – 9/10
