The Story

This comic is reviewed by Nerd Initiative’s Travis and yours truly, Megan!

Gwen has been burdened with nightmares that can only be described as disturbing. Finding herself to be the villain is a thought that tries to take over her mind, but currently, that’ll be hard to. You see, Gwen is actually happy in her life. She’s in a band that she loves, she’s grateful for the friends she has, and she is on the cusp of having a real boyfriend.

The almost-boyfriend, Fabian, asks Gwen on a date, and she’s excited that maybe they’ll make things official. After an awkward time at a much-too-fancy restaurant, Fabian finally asks Gwen to be his girlfriend. Gwen is elated! Finally everything seems to be going perfect! However, Gwen gets a text from her father with the simple word “help”. Things can’t stay perfect forever in Gwen’s world!

The Writing

Travis – Stephanie Phillips is something special. Going from multiple action-packed issues to hitting the breaks and giving Gwen a moment to reflect. The inner dialogue of Gwen is relatable, which is why this is such a good book for people to read! Stehpanie shows us a vulnerable side to Gwen, but if there is one thing I can always expect from Stephanie, that won’t last long at all…

Megan – In All-New Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #7, we get to see Gwen genuinely happy! After all she’s been through lately, like having to fight the embodiment of her anger in a symbiote form, she’s finally at a point where she can let herself feel her happiness. Of course, in classic Spider-Gwen form, that happiness doesn’t last forever for the next problem is right around the corner waiting. Stephanie Phillips shows her range when she’s able to write the different emotional points of Gwen’s life, whether it be her self confidence at an all time low, or feeling ecstatic after kissing the boy she likes.

With the way the comic ended, I am beyond excited to see Gwen take on this powerhouse of a villain. Phillips knows exactly how to get you excited for the next issue!

The Art

Travis – The art for this issue is so good! It carries all of the unique “spider-verse” visuals. You get to see amazing detail work not only in the characters but also in the backgrounds. Buildings, webbing, costumes, and various other accessories all brought to life in bold color choices. The shading is phenomenal! The overuse of shading in some panels add to the dramatic effect of where the story is meaning to take you. This is another beautiful issue that does not disappoint at all!

Megan – The artwork of All-New Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #7 is fantastic from beginning to end, all thanks to Paolo Villanelli, Matt Milla, and Ariana Maher. Villanelli’s use of dramatic detailing makes each page drip in depth, especially when Gwen is suited up with Black Tarantula. There’s an interesting ghost-like vibe given to the Black Tarantula’s look as he glides alongside Gwen that highlights Gwen’s sleek Ghost-Spider look. Matt Milla compliments Villanelli’s work excellently with his work on the colors. With using the bring colors contrasting the darker and heavier colors, Milla is able to make the characters practically pop off the page. Of course, Ariana Maher always delivers in quality when she works on the lettering. Maher brings emotion to the dialogue, that hammers down the tone of the comic. All in all, the artists continue to thrive and the readers continue to prosper from their talents.

Final Thoughts

Travis – 9/10! This issue brings you a Gwen that has been through so much, especially as of recently! But now you get to see a Gwen that is thankful for what she’s been able to accomplish. Even getting to see Gwen be vulnerable. This is a great issue that will have you wanting to turn the pages to see what might happen next!

Megan – 9/10. All-New Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #7 shows us a side of Gwen we aren’t used to seeing; happiness. Things are going well, but of course, as Spidey-Luck would have it, it doesn’t last for long. Stephanie Phillips and the artists bring an exciting comic that keeps you hooked until the very end.

Overall Grade – 9/10
