SUPERGIRL #9: New Year’s Resolutions!

Published:

Who doesn’t have a New Year’s Resolution? New Year, new me, of course! Even Supergirl has a few of her own. When the girls are invited to their friend Clarissa’s for a New Year’s Party, Lena isn’t thrilled about it being a dry event, which leads to Lesla asking questions and Lena inventing a way for her to experience what being drunk feels like. However, things don’t go according to plan as a giant mess is made, and somehow Lesla is shrinking!?

Curiosity may not kill those with superpowers, but Sophie brings another good lesson in friendship and more with this issue. Lena invents a form of Kryptonite so that Lelsa can experience what it’s like to feel the effects of alcohol. What’s funny about this issue is that in many iterations of Kara, we see she enjoys partying and having a good time; in this run, we see the opposite, so I enjoy that Sophie can deliver fresh takes on the character and develop her own story in various ways. Lesla feels as though she has had a chance to truly feel herself, and that’s something that a lot of people feel in everyday life, and the way Sophie can continue to connect this story and characters into real-life problems truly blows me away every issue.

Joe takes over on the art and picks up on the details in the emotions that pour out of this issue without skipping a beat. The party is full of everyone in fun and eventful outfits, and it was a joy seeing how inebriated Kara and Lesla looked. The panel of Supergirl bursting into the house, half in the bag, was a fun nod to the seriousness of the situation. I love the vivid use of colors and how it plays into the emotions you see on everyone’s face. The lettering of Becca plays into how hurt Lesla, Kara, and Lena all are in the aftermath of this situation, which invokes a ton of emotions!

Supergirl #9 raises the tension amongst our friend group and drops a cliffhanger like an anvil at the end of the issue that will certainly leave audiences clamoring for the next issue.

Overall Grade: 9.3/10
