MARVEL ZOMBIES RED BAND #4: Civil War

Published:

Spider-Man has his new black suit, connecting him to the hivemind of Zombies they left behind on Earth. As they return, the team quickly finds they are not alone, and they aren’t the only survivors of this nightmarish situation. Meanwhile, God is coming, leading to a civil war between the undead with Tony and Steve on opposite sides once more.

The Story:

Griffin and Ethan open up this penultimate issue with an injection of humor from our friendly Deadpool as he is hilariously being eaten by a zombie horde. It is the perfect opening, and the humor doesn’t die down from there. The team recreates iconic moments from the infamous Civil War storyline, pitting Steve and Tony against one another as Tony is preparing for their god to arrive. They may be zombies; however, the duo’s ability to have Steve be who he has always been at his core as he leads none other than Thanos, Bruce, and Doom into battle is a dream come true in a sense. What makes this run so great is that they have an open world to play with, which allows them to have memorable moments while playing freely. There is even a bit of romance between Peter and Jessica, which I never would have seen coming. They’re having a lot of fun making this story, and it shows.

The Art and Letters:

Greg and Rachelle nail the cover, teasing the readers of what lies inside the pages to come with this issue. The detail of flesh decaying and being ripped from bone mixed with the vibrant colors of their suits is enough to get us excited. Once inside, the art team nails the iconic moments such as Tony blasting his beams into Steve’s shield, which leads to their demise in an epic but funny manner. The details they can bring to life as each issue, the zombies are even more decayed and rotting, yet never more full of life, impresses me the most with this run. The coloring of the background captures the action happening, as there is a lifeless and dead vibrancy in the setting that is brought to life as the gauntlet and powers are put to use nailing the tones.

Final Thoughts:

Marvel Zombies Red Band #4 sets us up for an insane ending as we get Civil War with a crazy twist to it. This issue is packed full of hilarious quips and epic battle sequences paying homage to the moments we love most in the Marvel Universe. I am eager to see how this sticks the landing and for what is to come!
