Guy Gardner and Jay Garrick are two of the most prolific heroes the Justice League has ever known, and now the heart has pit them against one another to move on in this twisted tournament. Green Lantern and The Flash have both been through so much war and loss on their journeys, which means the only way this can be settled is by a game of…checkers?

The Story:

This issue is a classic fight between two seasoned veterans, and it brings that grit and knowledge along with it. I appreciate how much respect there is between the two as the fight begins. There is a bunch of humor as we would expect with Jay attempting to play a game of checkers and Guy not knowing how to play. The outcome broke my heart, so this issue truly had it all. Not to get lost in the mix, Wally West is bringing Bart to the past and dropping him on Lois’s couch. The way they can tie in three various storylines is impressive, with what is happening on the Watchtower on top of the fight and Wally’s storyline. The plot threads weave seamlessly throughout and the fight ultimately did not let us down either!

The Art and Letters:

There is an explosion of beautiful artwork as the colors of green and red work well together when showcasing two very different power sets. A classic samurai and anime fight is feeling as the two tip their caps to one another before an excellent splash page of Jay whipping his helmet at Guy. The lettering gives this a stoic feeling as well when the two slowly get angrier and angrier throughout. The pages where we switch storylines are done well as each Flash that appears on the pages has a different artistic feeling to the way they are detailed. Overall this issue is so well done and a visual masterpiece!

Final Thoughts:

The Flash #28 features a battle between two long time heroes with very opposite outlooks on this tournament and history. They have been tried and tested through time and leverage their experience into one visually stunning battle. The multiple storylines being weaved throughout this issue take us on an excellent journey that at no point becomes too confusing but rather hypes us up for what is next.
