The Story

Continuing the thrilling story between Daredevil and the Punisher, Jimmy Palmiotti picks up right where he left off in the first issue of Daredevil/Punisher: The Devil’s Trigger. Matt Murdock, AKA Daredevil, finally makes his way home but duty never sleeps. He asks Foggy to meet him for breakfast so he’s able to ask him a favor; get him all the information on the villains that were prematurely and quietly released from prison. Matt receives a call from Misty asking that she meet him that night to discuss something, so he heads home to finally nap after a chaotic couple of days.

Meanwhile, Frank Castle, AKA the Punisher, is making his way home to cater to his wounds after a wild night of giving his own form of justice to the Gnucci crew. On the train ride home, as luck would have it, Frank ran into some trouble with some felons that wanted all the smoke from the Punisher. The Punisher doesn’t back down from a fight, so this will easily be the worst train ride of the bad guy’s lives.

As luck would have it, Matt, who’s running late to meet Misty, waits for the exact same train that Frank is on. Of course, this isn’t an ideal situation to pull up to for Matt, or Frank either, as both have very opposing views on how to deal with criminals.

The Writing

Jimmy Palmiotti perfectly captures the qualities of Frank and Matt that make them authentic to their vigilante alter egos. Frank, knowing the sending the criminals to jail would be a waste of time, handles things the way he sees fit. Matt, who believes in due process and trusts the legal system, champions to call the police and have the criminals arrested. These opposing views are such a classic staple for the pair and their history together, and I love the way Palmiotti wrote these. There’s an obvious tension written between the two, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The Art

The artwork of Daredevil/Punisher: The Devil’s Trigger #2 perfectly matches the tone of the story. There’s a level of grittiness that comes with the characters that is perfectly captured by the artists. My favorite panels of the comic have to the action sequences that involve Daredevil and the Punisher, which keep the energy high and exciting.

The coloring of the comic is perfectly dark and muted, with the signature red of Daredevil being the focal point. The lettering of the comic excellently tells the story with all the emotions attached, including the dialogue of the characters who are coming from completely different perspectives. All this is thanks to Tommaso Bianchi, Gabriel Guzman, Bryan Valenza, and Joe Sabino, who perfectly nailed all the incredible artwork of the comic.

Final Thoughts

Daredevil/Punisher: The Devil’s Trigger #2 proves that the first issue wasn’t just a strong start, but a level of quality that the creative team stays steadily in. If you’re a Punisher fan, if you’re a Daredevil fan, then this comic is for you!
