The Story

When Doctor Doom received the title of Sorcerer Supreme, that meant that Doctor Strange was out of the job. With losing the title and in desperate need of a plan, Stephen Strange turned to Asgard to become the Sorcerer Supreme of Asgard. With Thor’s blessing, Stephen acquired the role, but it wasn’t easy from then on. Conspiring with Loki which lead to Thor’s death, ultimately separating Asgard from the other Nine Realms, Stephen didn’t have many allies on Asgard. Now, Stephen is trapped on Asgard with no way to get to Midgard and he has even less allies than ever before.

Lay Sif sent a message to Stephen that she would like a word with him. Upon his arrival, Lady Sif, who was wearing her bitterness on her sleeve, sends Stephen on a new mission, to Alfheim. There, Doctor Strange teams up with the angel, Angela, to assist the Regent of Heven. Idyl, who refuses the title of Queen of Heven, needs Stephen’s help with decapitating an Elf. This isn’t any Elf, as it’s a royal Elf who’s a murderous menace that’s under royal protection. Stephen, being the Sorcerer Supreme of Asgard, has agreed to help, but it seems this will be much more a challenge that requires different magic and different plans.

The Writing

Derek Landy brings a continuation of the thrilling life of Stephen Strange in his new world that follows the excitement and darkness of Doctor Strange of Asgard. Stephen, who’s in a lonely and uncertain time of his life, is showing he’s willing to prove himself to right the wrongs he’s had a hand in. Landy writes in a way that makes it easy to see how remorseful Stephen is, while also showcasing how confident he is in his own skills. With seeing the familiar face of Angela in the story, I think it’s clear that Doctor Strange will bring the heat just as Doctor Strange of Asgard did.

The Art

The tone is set immediately with a gorgeous full page view of Doctor Strange showcasing his Sorcerer Supreme talents, and it only gets better from there. With the work of Ivan Fiorelli, Dono Sánchez-Almara, and Cory Petit, Doctor Strange #1 is a mystically beautiful comic with art that matches the magical story perfectly. Fiorelli illustrates the characters that sells the emotions of the story expertly. Sánchez-Almara brings vibrancy to the pages that gives the story that excellent otherworldly feel.

Cory Petit always delivers when it comes to lettering as he’s able to create the even flow of dialogue while making the reader read the emotion in each of the words. Together, these artists brought a beautiful comic that keeps your eyes locked into the pages.

Final Thoughts

Doctor Strange #1, while is a continuation, is an extremely strong start to what looks to be a very exciting ride of a comic.
