MARVEL ZOMBIES RED BAND #3: God is Coming

Published:

Jean Grey is the latest to succumb to the violent plague that has taken so many of Earth’s mightiest heroes. As she now wields the Phoenix power in addition to this zombie virus, there is nothing and nobody left to stop her. Meanwhile, the Silver Surfer has found Dr. Strange existing outside of his body, leading the two to seek desperate measures and alliances with none other than Thanos himself.

The Story:

Griffin and Ethan continue to create a storyline that is equal parts terrifying and gruesome, and yet hilarious at the same time. The zombies are flesh-seeking creatures from Hell, and yet there are moments, such as Daredevil eating his last eyeball and how it disgusts Reed, that you cannot help but laugh at. Every time I wonder just where the duo can take this run next, we get our answer quickly, and unfortunately, it is taking us to Dr. Strange and Surfer helping Thanos find the final Infinity Stone to complete the gauntlet.

If it seems too easy and simple, most often that is because it is too easy and simple. They two pledged to serve Thanos, but that may have been a mistake, and Ethan and Griffin leave us on a blood-soaked and queasy Cliff-hanger.

The Art and Letters:

I can appreciate a great cover, such as the one Greg and Rachelle deliver on this issue for the main cover. Each stone has a reflection inside of it, and a zombie Thanos powerfully wielding it, leading us to believe we know what happens next. Once inside the pages, Jan and Eric get extra grotesque with their artwork. Tony is getting his flesh eaten by Phoenix. The way they spare no detail in the way these zombies rip apart their prey is impressive, and it’s almost as though you can hear them eating. Travis continues to add this creepy lettering style giving each undead their own voice that combined with the graphic details make this really stand out.

Final Thoughts:

Marvel Zombies Red Band #3 calls for desperate times and takes us to some pretty intense places at the same time. This is Marvel Zombies in a way we’ve never seen it before, and you will not want to miss out as it is equal parts terrifying, funny, and packed full of surprises!
