Catch up with Marvel/DC: Deadpool Batman #1!

The Story
Matt – Genuinely, what can I say except that this book hit every mark for me personally. This issue will have everything for fans of both Marvel and DC, whether it is the main story of Batman and Deadpool in some weird and alternate universe, in which, dare I say, we get a little bit of humor from Bats?? To the side stories, to which we get characters that should not be able to work together as well as they do, such as Harley and Hulk. We would expect a lot of fourth-wall breaking in Marvel with Deadpool, and yet DC and Grant brought the sledgehammer out to smash that fourth wall to pieces in this issue. The duo worked extraordinarily well together, and their chemistry hit new highs.
The side stories were oozing with chemistry. Laura and Dick was the best story, but that does not diminish the others for me. The two nepo heroes share a lot in common, and it was endearing seeing them work together and be two sides of the same coin. We get Harley and Hulk in the most wonderful story of unlikely friendship, Ms. Marvel and Static with some flirtatious heroism, and then Doctor Strange and Constantine in a battle of ego. This issue has it all.
Megan – Continuing the exciting crossover with DC and Marvel and with the yelps of delight from the fans everywhere, we now have DC/Marvel: Batman/Deadpool #1! In the comic, you have “The Cosmic Kiss Caper“, which is the main story featuring our titled characters, Batman and Deadpool. In what turns out to be a very meta story, you get to see the interactions between Deadpool and Batman in ways never seen before.
Alongside that story, you also have four other stories with team ups that we’ve only imagined happening like Laura Kinney and Nightwing, Harley Quinn and the Hulk, Ms. Marvel and Static, or Doctor Strange and John Constantine. Each story comes with its own theme, and its own charm that was clearly written with excitement from the writers. This book was written with the DC and Marvel fans in mind, and it shows on every page.
The Art
Matt – There are some artist team-ups in this book that are bucket list duos for me. Getting to see Tynion and Williamson draw and color Ghost Rider and Swamp Thing was such a fun experience, and they brought about this rustic and old-timey vibe in their story with Snyder. The overall main story, Mora and Sanchez, knocked it out of the park. The colors of Batman’s suit and the fun artistic liberties they bring, such as Deadpool carrying an arrow-filled Batman, were poster-worthy. Each story brought its own flavor and tone to them, artistically making them all stand out in a unique fashion!
Megan – There are quite a few artists that worked on DC/Marvel: Batman/Deadpool #1 and each brings their own personal style to the stories. What I really appreciated was how the artwork was able to play off the crossover characters in each story. For example, “Harley & Hulk’s Amazin’ Saturday” was very vibrant and happy in terms of tone, while “Sticks & Snikts” was more muted with contrasting colors from Nightwing and Laura’s suits.
Each artist lets their talents shine brightly throughout the comic, giving each story a whole new level of depth. Every artist knocked it out of the park!
Final Thoughts
Matt – 10/10. DC/Marvel: Batman/Deadpool #1 is perhaps the best thing I have read all year. The main story is full of fourth-wall breaking and funny moments, and each side story brings a variety of emotions to them in unique ways.
Megan – 10/10. DC/Marvel: Batman/Deadpool #1 is a wild roller coaster ride filled with team ups and exciting stories you don’t want to get off of.
Overall Grade – 10/10
