The Story

Even in a new world of chaos and devastation, the constant need for the Avengers is still there. With how much has changed, the Avengers have felt the brunt of the changes themselves. The team, which is made up of Dani Moonstar, Hawkeye, Vision, Water Widow, Shang-Chi, Variable Man and Cannonball, had their effects of the X-Virus and had to work through the changes to stay the Earth’s mightiest team. Led by Dani Moonstar, who now holds the shield of Captain America, she’s the driving force that keeps the team moving and helping the world.

Although the Avengers are here to help, they’re not seen that way by the public. Nicknamed “X-Vengers”, which isn’t a compliment given how hated the X-Men are in this new future, they’re not well received by the citizens in the Age of Revelation. Even with how much hate is thrown their way, the Avengers put their new mutant abilities to use and do what they can to create a safer tomorrow, even if the problem is very much out of their capabilities.

The Writing

Jason Loo leaves his mark in the X-Men: Age of Revelation event in a big way with X-Vengers #1. The lineup of the Avengers is full of powerhouses and characters that worked past their effects of the X-Virus and ended up even more compelling characters than ever before.

The team being led by Dani Moonstar works so well given how much of a fighter she’s always been, and being someone so worthy of carrying the shield. With her dialogue addressing the deceased Captain America, you get a great sense of the hardships the team have had to go through. You also get a great idea of the respect and love Dani has for the Avengers teammates. After all that’s happened in the Marvel World with Revelation and his chaos, Jason Loo perfectly showcased what makes the Avengers, their heart, compassion, and motivation.

The Art

The artists of X-Vengers #1 give us a great look at our new mutated Avengers and the new world they live in. Sergio Dávila and Aure Jimenez, the artist and inker of the comic, was able to perfectly illustrate the emotions of the comic. Whether it be Dani’s self doubt, or Scott’s grief, Dávila and Jimenez showed us that all this time had much more of an impact on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes than just on their superpowered abilities.

Alongside Dávila Jimenez is Rain Beredo, who is the color artist of X-Vengers #1. Beredo is able to make each page have its own focal point with the characters, making them stand out with their own set of vibrant colors, while making them all mesh together perfectly as a team.

Final Thoughts

X-Vengers #1 is the perfect example of all that’s changed with the Age of Revelation within the Marvel Universe, and also shows how some things haven’t changed especially when it comes to the Avengers.
