  • Who is the King in Black?

Marvel Rivals King in Black #1:

We begin our journey into Marvel Rivals King in Black with a little refresher for readers about Klyntar, the home of Symbiotes and Knull, the Symbiote God.

Soon after, Rocket, Thing, Jeff and others show up to this horrifying planet to … party?!?! Well, this party goes horribly wrong real fast!

Creative Team:

Writer: Paul Allor

Artist: Nico Leon

Color Artist: Dee Cunniffe

Letters: VC’s Joe Sabino

Publisher: Marvel Comics

The Art:

Nico does a really nice job crafting art that can enhance the wide-ranging story that feels like a movie more than a comic.

So many heroes working to figure out the symbiotes, while some of the allies fall to these dangerous aliens.

All the while Galacta watches over the action, cringing from the battle that pins infected hero against hero in a race against time, or until everyone’s taken over by symbiotes.

The art has a youthful feel as well, which really matches the story to perfection.

The Writing:

This is where the fun begins. Allor is able to orchestrate an absolutely overwhelming amount of story in such a concise, incredible way.

Like I said, this feels like one of those movies like Pulp Fiction, where the storyline is complex, yet interwoven into a much bigger narrative.

There are little teams and pockets of chaos and without proper writing, this story could easily be very hard to follow.

But Allor pulls this off nicely. Especially in the case of Blade and Shuri, who are trying to figure out the Symbiote problem, while the rest of the heroes go to battle.

Overall Grade: 9/10

It’s Blade’s backstory that really steals the show here, but this opening issue really has a bit of everything.

There’s heart-pumping action, there’s trauma to one of our favorite heroes and there’s failure for those who fall to the symbiotes.

The art is inspiring and the storyline heroic, yet heartbreaking at times. This is a must-read!
