The Story
After so much chaos, after so much devastation, it all leads to this. On this Halloween night, Batman, joined by Commissioner Gordon and Robin, is ready to put an end to the violence, to the Gotham City War between good and evil. Narrated by the Dark Knight himself, we get an interesting look at exactly where his head is at.
Batman is ready to end it all after Gotham City has been at odds and separated into two factions for a year now. He’s being told that he’s been on the wrong side by both sides, but Batman doesn’t care for sides, he cares for a finish. Battling against the likes of the Joker, the Riddler, or Harvey Dent, Batman has a few tricks up his sleeves to ensure that the fighting comes to an end and the parties responsible are punished appropriately.

Jeph Loeb delivers a satisfying ending to the fighting with some perfect inner dialogue from Batman himself. There’s a great sense of finality that drives the ending home coming from Batman, Robin, and Commissioner Gordon that makes the comic end on a strong note. The villains were written to provide so much depth to the comic, and Loeb absolutely nailed it. What I really appreciate about Loeb’s writing is his talent to have so many characters in a story and give them all their own place to shine without watering down the others. That quality shines very brightly in Batman: The Long Halloween – The Last Halloween #10.
The Art
The artwork throughout the comic is precisely what you would want to see from a Batman comic, the darkness, the action, the looming ominous feeling that keeps you on your toes. Matteo Scalera perfectly captures the essence of a high energy Batman story with the artwork with their use of excellent details in every panel, and excellent character drawings.
Dave Stewart, the colorist, hammers in the Halloween energy with his use of oranges, yellows and black backgrounds throughout the comic, contrasting the characters and the action. Alongside the artist and colorist Richard Starkings and Comicraft’s Tyler Smith who handle the lettering and design, and ensures that the energy stays high through the dialogue of the comic. Together, the artists outdid themselves here with a comic that has quality as high as the stakes!
Final Thoughts
There’s no better way to get into the Halloween spirit than a harrowing Batman comic! The creative team knocked it out of the park!
