The Story
The White Tiger, who’s a very underrated character in my opinion, has had a tragic backstory, especially when it was Hector donning the amulet. With the devastating death of Hector after he was wrongly convicted of murder, it was down to his family to take the mantle of the White Tiger, backed by the Tiger God. Today, the White Tiger is none other than Ava Ayala, the sister of Hector.
Ava has had a very tough go at it lately. She’s going through a depressive state in her life, she misses her brother and feels that she’s failed him, and she hasn’t heard from the Tiger God in months. In “Reborn“, the first story in White Tiger: Reborn #1, we see how Ava can go from her lowest, and fight her way back to the top.
It was a powerful thing to see when the hero feels like a failure who will only go lower in their darkness. Daniel José Older, the writer of the story, brings back the history or Hector, and perfectly shows how Ava is still impacted by Hector today.
In the second story, “Song of the Coqui”, we see Angela, Ava and Hector’s niece and former White Tiger, attending a benefit to save the coqui. With her uncle’s presence felt all other the story, there’s a beautiful mending of a broken relationship that would’ve made Hector proud.
The Art
The art of White Tiger: Reborn #1 feels like it does the character justice, with the incredible action-filled panels and emotional energy on every page. In “Reborn“, we see Ava go through a huge shift as the White Tiger, and the artist, Bruno Abdias, perfectly captures the dramatic shift.
In both stories, the impact of the White Tiger is illustrated wonderfully, showing the true power of the character, and the strength of Ava who takes on the mantel.
Overall Grade – 8.9/10
I really hope this means we’re going to get more White Tiger in Marvel Comics. Both stories did the character justice, and makes me want so much more of White Tiger. This was a perfect way to celebrate Hispanic & Latin American Heritage Month!
