This is a review by both Matt of the weekly pop-culture podcast Hops ‘Geek’ News and Megan of the weekly non-toxic Marvel podcast Vigilante Vibes!

The Story:

Matt – Erik brings all of the quips to this epic story that takes us back to 1939. He captures the spirit of a great noir epic and still has Peter’s essence all wrapped into it. Distinctly, as well we are told this is not a Spider-Man we are used to. He wields guns to make things fair, and that plays into this as well.

It doesn’t take long to immerse us in the mystery of things as Gwen’s father was killed and there are some bread crumbs laid about with a big cliff hanging ending.

Megan – In the usual Spider-Man lifestyle, Peter is struggling financially, socially, and job-wise. Peter is living in an apartment he can’t afford the rent on, he doesn’t have a social life outside of his private eye business or being Spider-Man, and he’s struggling to make ends meet with his job. While he’s inches away from getting evicted from his apartment for lack of paying rent, he gets a new client, Gwendolyn Stacy. Gwendolyn wants Peter to find the person who murdered her father, who was pulled out of the river with gunshots in his body. Peter is told that George Stacy told his daughter that the police are corrupt and to trust no one, and this seems very factual as the police have acted with nothing but suspicious behavior.

Erik Larson brings in an exciting story about an underrated Peter Parker, but with the same Spider-Man tones that we all know and love. With Peter searching down the clues as to what happened to George Stacy, along with his problems that are so on brand for Peter Parker, I am very excited to see where he goes with this story. Especially after that cliffhanger we ended on!

The Art and Letters:

Matt – Andrea and Rachelle capture the details of 1939 New York through the clothing and the vibe. Spider-Man’s suit, despite being black, still has details such as the lines in the mask and his attire. I love how he crafted to stand out on the panels, flying high. When it comes to him using his webbing, there are subtle differences as he shoots them overhanded. It’s these little things that endeared me to this issue and will keep me coming back for more.

Megan – Andrea Braccado and Rachelle Rosenberg showed up and showed out with Spider-Man Noir #1. Perfectly capturing the old school vibes of the time period while including the fun action that comes with Spider-Man, the duo made their talents shine. Along with Braccado and Rosenberg, Joe Sabino handles the lettering, and creates a great flow throughout the comic.

Overall Grade: 9/10

Final Thoughts

Matt – 9/10. Spider-Man Noir #1 takes us into a murder-mystery that is full of quips, action, and mystery. The art soars high, and the plot has us guessing as to just what is going to happen. Pick up this book, you will not be disappointed!

Megan – 9/10. There was a perfect amount of mystery, relatability, and the classic Spider-Man quips that we all love. With an excellent cliffhanger, you will be craving more Spider-Man Noir by the last page.
