Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) are still traveling through Europe Sunday nights on AMC and AMC+. Currently in Spain, they’re trying to make their way home, but travel can be hell. Especially in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.
WARNING: There are spoilers for any previous episodes, however, Season 3 Episode 4 is spoiler free.

Last Seen on Daryl Dixon
The season premiere spent some time in London, before crash landing via sailboat into Spain. Daryl and Carol forced their way into a group that seemed like they had things together. Only to learn things of course, are never as they seem. Daryl wants nothing more than to make his way home, while Carol has become more emotionally healthy then we’ve ever seen her.
Last season she finally faced Sofia’s death. While she’ll never fully move on (no parent does), she did find some peace. It seems to have given her hope for the future. She wants to help those they’ve met. Daryl not so much. Last episode Daryl finally agreed to let two young love birds sail back to the states with them. Unknowingly to Roberto, his love was sick of watching the young women in their group be “sacrificed.” So she volunteered to save another from an unknown future.

“La Justicia Fronteriza” or Border Justice
Upon learning of Justina‘s sacrifice, Roberto is angry. He wants answers. His father and Justina’s Uncle Fede, (the leader of the group) are being creepily vague. There is a past they won’t speak of.
Meanwhile Daryl and Carol have help fixing up their sailboat. They also learn how to navigate the sea, and properly tie knots. Things are seemingly hopeful for the two of them at the moment. In The Walking Dead universe, hope is simply a prelude to chaos. The chaos gives Roberto the motive and means to do what he wants. However, a mission fueled solely on emotion doesn’t often end well.

Overall Grade: 8/10
This was hands down the most action packed episode this season, so far. It was a walker filled battle scene. The Walking Dead has gotten grossly creative over the years with their walker deaths, and we got to see quite a bit of that creativity in this episode. While the fight scenes were incredibly fun to enjoy that wasn’t what this episode was about.
This universe has been around for 15 years this Halloween (not including the comics). That’s a long time to be fighting the undead. However, this universe has never really been about the walkers. It’s about survival, humanity, and the lack thereof. More importantly it’s about those 2 dirty 4 letter words: hope and love. What’s the point of surviving, if you can’t enjoy any of the wonderful things life has to offer? Episode 4, really seemed to lean into that. However, to keep fighting you need something to fight for.
