Marvel has returned with their epic four-part mini-series, following up on the one-off episode of their series What..If? Be warned, spoilers lie ahead!

The Young Avengers!

The series essentially picks up where What..If? leaves off after their zombie episode, where we ended with a zombified Thanos wielding the Infinity Gauntlet.

From the get-go, writers Zeb Wells and Bryan Anderson give us the long-awaited team-up of Kamala Khan, Riri Williams, and Kate Bishop, albeit this ends up rather short-lived in the end.

MORE MARVEL ZOMBIES!

The series is full of surprise team-ups throughout as they give us Katy, Jimmy Woo, and Shang-Chi in a Mad Max-style post-zombie world. Dave Harbour returns as well as Red Guardian, to whom he and Kamala grow a loving father-daughter bond in this series.

We even finally get to see Blade (F. Murray Abraham) enter the MCU as he is Blade Knight, the current fist of the Egyptian God Konshu.

Bloody Surprises

While this doesn’t follow the infamous zombie comics from the likes of Robert Kirkman, the influences are still there. Episode two gifts us the origins of the zombies, showing us that an accident at Pym Labs sets off the world-ending event. If you were wondering what happened to Peter, Scott, and T’Challa, don’t worry, all will be revealed in a clever tie-in picking up where their story left off.

The main antagonist once again is Wanda, as Marvel doesn’t seem to know what to do with her character other than make her the villain. She is the Queen of the Dead who spends the entire series chasing after the group, and more specifically, Kamala. There are a few more character surprises in there that fans will be sure to enjoy and it features more characters we haven’t seen enough of in the MCU.

Mature Rated Indeed

The series doesn’t hold back in terms of gore and violence. Many of our characters meet their end in absolutely gruesome ways. Bodies are ripped in half, eaten, blown up, torn to shreds, and so much more as Marvel leans into how terrifying zombies can truly be with the four episodes they have. The animation was stellar in this show and full of bright and clever sequences. The art team does an incredible job putting their everything into this show.

The show does an excellent job of bringing Kamala to the forefront, and Iman truly puts on an amazing voice performance, going through heartbreak and torture in the four episodes. The show ends in both a definitive manner but, also leaving the door wide open for future seasons with a bit of a cliffhanger.

Final Thoughts

Marvel Zombies packs a gruesome punch, bringing many of our beloved heroes to life in this frightening post-apocalyptic world where anything and everything wants to eat them. The action, violence, and gore all earn their mature rating, and the voice performances are top-notch. This will be a series I will watch again and one I think fans will find themselves enjoying. Here’s to hoping we get more!
