The Story
Being a superhero is something that consumes your life. Being a hero, saving innocent people, and taking on bad guys, none of that is usually included in a normal life. Gwen decided to do something outside of the superhero agenda, and that was to start a band. However, these plans were derailed when her would-be bassist was killed by a monster.
The creature went on a violent rampage against the people that’s supposed to be in her band. After Wes, the would-be bassist, was killed, the monster didn’t stop with him.
Cindy Moon, AKA Silk, who was also supposed to be in Gwen’s band, was attacked in her own home. Unconscious in the hospital, Cindy isn’t able to tell Gwen or the police what happened. The only thing Gwen can do is find the monster herself, even though she has no idea what she’s up against.
With every disastrous thing that happens to Gwen, you can see her anger boiling a little more over. Even her dad made mention of her anger after vocalizing his worry for his daughter.
I’m really interested to see where Stephanie Phillips takes this with Gwen, as she’s been through so much already with getting new powers, universe hopping, and even a new boyfriend. There’s an interesting tension building through the story, along with a lot of mystery, and I’m excited to see where it all goes.
The Art
Paolo Villanelli continues his work on All-New: Spider–Gwen: Ghost-Spider with the second issue, and also continues to knock it out of the park. There’s an interesting darkness surrounding the story that I think Villanelli perfectly captures in his drawings.
What I’ve always loved about Villanelli’s work is that it’s the perfect amount of drama in the art that elevates the tone of the story, and that’s seen very clearly in this comic. Matt Milla matches Villanelli’s energy and mixes the vibrant colors with the dark blacks, that makes you feel the darkness of the story.
Overall Grade – 8.7/10
Dripping with action, tension, and darkness, All-New Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #2 continues to show that Stephanie Phillips is the perfect person to write Gwen Stacy.
