In honor of Batman Day 2025, I would like to acknowledge the top five Batman characters. Whether they are foes or friends, all of these characters make an impression on comic readers or movie watchers. Here are my personal favorites, that have impressed me over the years.
Scarecrow has appeared across many Batman comics. The Scarecrow in my belief, is one of the scarier villains that Batman has. He is called the “Master of Fear” and when I saw him on screen he was indeed scary. Cillan Murphy had portrayed him in ‘The Dark Knight’ trilogy, and did an excellent job with portraying the character. It is also ironic, throughout the comics, it is mentioned that he has a fear of Bats.
Robin is Batman’s sidekick, through many comics and films, and T.V. shows. Robin is one of my favorite characters, because he always has something to say to Batman. Many times, Batman is providing a “father figure” role to Robin. There are many robins throughout the comics, one of my favorites is Damian Wayne. Robin also serves as someone who Batman actually cares about, and that is few and far between.
3. James Gordon (Commissioner Gordon)
What is Batman, without the Commissioner who lets Batman literally do anything. Although he is the father of Barbara Gordon, (Batgirl), he is someone who again wants to help Batman. In the comics, he wants to always have Batman’s help, in terms of keeping Gotham City safe. Commissioner Gordon also loves his family, and has a lot of conversations with Barbara about his beliefs. Especially when it comes to Barbara, and the choices she makes in the comics. Both Batman and Gordon have a good friendship, and Gordon trusts Batman’s opinion.
One of the most street-level villains that I’ve seen is the Penguin. In many of the comics, he is sort of a joke. Compared to most of Batman’s villains, he is not one of the strongest. In terms of his mind, he is very well feared. Due to the popularity in the Penguin series, it did help people realize that the Penguin is more dangerous than what people realize.
And at Number One….. THE JOKER!
This is Batman’s all-time number one villain. Joker is iconic in his own right, in the comics. Usually he is finding ways to either annoy or get Batman to fail in saving Gotham or anyone that is close to him. Many of Batman’s comics showcase Joker as an unhinged psychopath, whose job it is to torment Batman.
