The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, Season 3 Episode 2 – “La Ofrenda”

Published:

Sunday nights on AMC and AMC+ are once again walker filled, and just in time for spooky season. Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) are back, and just trying to get home. A mission made much more difficult during an apocalypse. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is in Spain this season! Last we saw these two they had just arrived there.

WARNING: there are spoilers for the last episode ahead, however, the recap and review for episode 2, are safer than a can of hot dogs.

Last Seen on Daryl Dixon

Episode 1 showed us an apocalypse tour of London, introduced a new character played by Stephen Merchant, and had a lot of booze in it. I quickly fell in love with Merchant’s character, Julian, only to quickly say good bye. At least he was “Knot Alone” when he passed (a nod to his sailboat), and he moved the story along to Spain. Last we saw Carol she was injured in the boat crash that brought them from England to Spain. While Daryl thinks she’s resting off her injury, he comes back from a hunt to find her gone.

“La Ofrenda” or The Offering

It’s no surprise Daryl finds Carol, however, what she’s staring at is a surprise. It could be her recent feelings of closure over Sofia’s death, or her current fever, but her and Daryl view this situation very differently. With Carol’s current health status Daryl will do anything to get her what she needs. Off to meet the locals they go.

While they find the help she needs, they find a lot more as well. Much like in the real world, every country, town, and person, handles things differently. A town that seems to be flourishing in survival and maintaining their cultural traditions, is making a huge sacrifice. A sacrifice that is unclear. It’s unclear in what it is providing as well, as what exactly is being sacrificed. Once again, Daryl and Carol view the situation very differently.

Overall Grade: 8.5/10

In season one of original series, The Walking Dead, we met a CDC scientist who mentioned he had been working with the French. Since that moment I had been wondering what the rest of the world was doing, and I love that Daryl Dixon is showing us. Now in Spain we’re seeing their culture, history, food, and a different way of life in a world shared with the “Hollowed Ones.” Add that to the list of names for walkers.

Carol has mastered the facade of being nothing more than a weak woman who needs protecting. Meanwhile, she’s one of the most badass people the undead world has faced. Yet, she seems genuinely softer right now, but not in a weak way. In an empathetic way that I don’t think she’s let herself feel since Henry was murdered by the Whisperers. As Daryl suppresses his feelings about losing Isabel, the two of them are not on the same page about what to do next. Which seems to be a real first for them.
