Labor Day has come and gone, and we must admit that the summer of 2025 is over. Now is the time to look back on this season and discuss the top five films of the summer.
Any such list would be largely subjective without strict metrics. I decided the best way to determine the top 5 movies of the summer of 2025 would be to let you, the theater-going viewers, decide through the democracy of your own hard-earned cash.
What follows is the top 5 films as reported through box office returns from boxofficemojo.com. This list defines “Summer 2025” as May 2 through September 1.

#5 – How to Train Your Dragon, June 13, 2025
DreamWorks Pictures has made a massive franchise with the How to Train Your Dragon IP, based on the books by Cressida Cowell. Three animated films, several short films, and four animated series are spread across various platforms. Every streaming network, video games, graphic novels, and theme park attractions all serve to celebrate the billion-dollar franchise. A live-action version of the film was all but inevitable. This is the age created by Disney’s successful re-imaginings, which began in the 1990s. They really kicked off in earnest after the success of Beauty & the Beast in 2017.

Critics have praised DreamWorks How to Train Your Dragon, with our own Matt praising the acting, chemistry, animation, cinematography, and the film overall. The film pulled in a massive haul at the box office. It’s no surprise to anyone that the studio is going full steam ahead on a live-action version of the original film’s sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2. The film has been announced for the summer of 2027, so you can expect that we’ll be revisiting this conversation in two years.

#4 – Fantastic Four: First Steps, July 25, 2025
Marvel’s First Family has arrived on the big screen. As is often the case with Marvel releases of the last several years, fans and critics were divided on the relative success and appeal of Fantastic Four: First Steps. I, personally, gave the film an 8 out of 10, citing its fresh environment, rich colors ripped from the pages of its comics, and genuine tension and camaraderie.
All of its core actors are perfectly cast, their dynamic is palpable, and Ben Grimm, often the visual outlier in previous films, feels both plausible and welcome. It’s the rare origin film that doesn’t use its entire runtime for boring exposition and pits the team against its most formidable adversary in true world’s stakes action.
This film carefully balanced family and fear, giving us quiet moments alongside earth-shattering destruction. It will be very interesting to see how the Fantastic Four Five fare alongside the larger Marvel Universe, but with the Russos back at the helm of the upcoming Avengers films, I’m confident they’re in good hands. With Avengers: Doomsday slated for a December 2026 release, we’ll be revisiting this film in a few scant months.

#3 – Jurassic World: Rebirth, July 2, 2025
We’ve all seen Nicole Kidman sitting in a darkened AMC theater and extolling the bliss of staring at a giant silver screen to be transported to a world we’ve never been to before… to see she’s watching a Jurassic Park film. We’ve now been to the park seven times. As a fan of the original novel, I had a deep interest in these films when they first hit the screen in 1993. Sadly, that excitement has waned. I didn’t see Dominion, and I didn’t see Rebirth, but box office returns assure me that many of us did.

Our own Matt gave the film an 8 out of 10, citing a return to action and form that allowed the film to supplant one of the original trilogy’s in his top three. Whether I might be personally suffering from dinosaur fatigue, the box office returns show that a large swath of the public is still quite interested in our scaly ancestors. Or at least Scarlett Johansson.

#2 – Superman, July 11, 2025
James Gunn’s Superman was likely the most-hyped movie of summer 2025, reimagining the character for a modern audience and establishing Gunn’s vision for DC in his Gods & Monsters phase. The opening title card lays out the rules of his established universe, and we’re thrown directly into the action as keen viewers no longer require the exposition of a two-hour origin story.
The inclusion of the Justice Gang and characters from deeper DC lore that have never had the luxury of a screen appearance created a colorful film that treated audiences to a comic-accurate story that blends Supe’s deep thematic elements with humor and spectacle. Our own Ken gave the film a 9 out of 10, citing it as a “must see” due to its themes of hope, perfect cast, and interplay of tension and comfort.
With Man of Tomorrow already announced for a 2027 release, we’ll be revisiting this film in the next two years as Gunn’s and Safran’s vision continues to play out on screens large and small.

#1 – Lilo & Stitch, May 23, 2025
And in no surprise to anyone, the number one film of the summer of 2025 is a Disney live-action remake, this time of the modern classic, 2002’s Lilo & Stitch. Telling the story of an alien biological weapon that come to Earth, Experiment 626 befriends a young girl in Hawaii and finds new purpose in a found family film that promotes community, hope, and the transcendence of our origins.
You know, kind of like Superman. I haven’t gotten around to seeing the film, myself, but I think we can all agree that it’s not really made for me. This is a film for kids and their reluctant parents. Maybe Elvis fans. The film stands head-and-shoulders above its contemporaries for the summer season, earning $72M more than the film in the number two slot, declaring it the clear winner.
Discussion
This list is, as noted, based on box office returns, and the picture is clear: audiences are willing to pay the exorbitant prices to see a film in theaters if it offers spectacle and a communal experience. Likewise, the top five slots are comprised of sure bets – films with established IP and broad appeal. Family films and PG-13 action fare are the clear winners.
This has been the DNA of the film box office for decades, and there’s no shame in that game. There were few original films released over 2025 as a whole, but some surprising hits surfaced, such as Sinners, Weapons, and F1.
While this list focuses on box office numbers, I’d be remiss if I didn’t at least mention some of the streaming gems we were treated to this summer, such as Heads of State, Happy Gilmore 2, and of course, KPop Demon Hunters.
So what did you think of this list? Any surprises? Snubs? What’s your personal number one of the summer? Do our decisions about the films we’ll pay to see in the theater actually align with quality and satisfaction or are we shooting ourselves in the foot every time we reach for the sure bet rather than take a chance on something that may actually move or affect us?
