THE FIVE TRIBULATIONS

Back in The Avengers vol.1, “The Impossible City” storyline, Captain Marvel was sent to nowhen, nowhere. Also known as Null-Time. The nothingness between moments and the last refuge for a dying Kang the Conqueror. A life-long sworn enemy of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Although a threat, this time he came looking for help. Kang announced to Captain Marvel the coming of 5 different tribulations. These were five different events the heroes will have to face in the near future.

THE MISSING MOMENT

Back in 2022, Kang was seen searching for “the Missing Moment”. This was the second in history that Kang was unable to access. Through his conquests, he learned that to access the missing moment, the five tribulations needed to be met and passed. However, the tribulations needed to be overcome by heroes. Which Kang is not. The missing moment was the first step for what Kang called the Grail. The ultimate price for the ultimate adventurer. But before Kang could come up with a plan to solve this problem, he got a visit from a fellow villain and adventurer.

MYRDDIN & THE TWILIGHT COURT

The main reason for Kang’s charity towards the Avengers was the looming danger of someone worse than him. Myrddin and his Twilight court faced Kang back in “Timeless 2022” (Marvel Comics). Kang put up a fight and almost deterred the group all by himself. But eventually, Myrddin got the best of the conqueror. With no other options, Kang transferred his dying self to Null-Time to wait for the Avengers.

3 DOWN, 2 MORE TO GO

Kang has been recovering from his near-death battle with Myrddin. While he lay resting in a bed in the Impossible City, the Avengers faced all sorts of challenges. Beginning with the first Tribulation via the confrontation with the Ashen Combine. Later, they faced the Blood Hunt brought by Vernae and the Bloodcoven. Lastly was the One World Under Doom event. Doctor Doom became the Sorcerer Supreme and imposed his will on the entire world. Now, the Avengers prepared themselves for the next event. Since they decoded Kang’s data, they have insight into what the Missing Moment is.

TWILIGHT COURT’S ORIGINS

Just like Kang, Myrddin needed heroes to overcome the Tribulation Events. Hence the creation of the Twilight Court. Each member of Myrddin’s Twilight Court was created in the image of an Avenger. Artur the King after the Black Panther. Lancelot the Star after Captain Marvel. Galehaut the God after Thor and the Storm. Bedivere the Engineer after Iron Man. Bercilak the Construct after the Vision. Parsifal the Icon after Captain America. Lastly, Mordred the Witch after the Scarlet Witch. These stand-in heroes were supposed to bring Myrddin closer to the missing moment and the grail. But they failed. According to Myrddin’s time travel research, they would always fail him.

THE MISSING MOMENT’S ORIGIN

Finally, the Avengers learned what the missing moment was. Moreover, they understand what the grail was supposed to be for. Many years ago, the universe went under the incursions. Where worlds and universes were colliding against each other causing unmeasurable catastrophes. The missing moment was born when Reed Richards Mr. Fantastic created a new universe to escape the Battle World. (To learn more about the incursions check Secret Wars 2015, Marvel Comics). That missing moment contains the grail. Which is a sort of passage to the next universe after this one is destroyed.

HOW ABOUT THE ART?

Once again, Farid Karam returns as the main penciler for the Avengers and I for one, I’m happy he’s back. Issue #29 is busy with characters, flashbacks and splash pages that give this new arc an epic feel. Federico Blee and Cory Petite gave life and texture with their amazing coloring and lettering.

OVERALL GRADE: 10/10

Jed MacKay is reeling in some aspects of Secret Wars (2015) to make this new story whole. Also, there’s the thread he started in Timeless #1 (2022) with the concept of the missing moment. Finally, everything is coming together for the Avengers to stop Myrddin and save the world.
